In August I started my thirty-ninth year of teaching. Over the years I have taught every grade except second. Twenty-six years ago I found my nitch in the teaching profession -kindergarten. For this is the beginning....the beginning of a long journey for most children in the art of surviving "organized education". Kindergarden can "make or break" a young child's perception of school. Up until this point, the child has learned many things: crawling, walking and talking are just a few, in a carefree and unstructured environment. School, by its very nature is a structured environment, with rules and regulations that need to be mastered in order that "the group" can learn important concepts without the disruption of unruly students. As a teacher of young children, it is my job to create a loving and caring community of learners who understand the need for respect for one another and most especially for themselves as we embark on this journey. It has also been my privledge to continue to nurture their sense of wonder in the world that surrounds them. I often think of Rachel Carson who said it far better then I. After three weeks of school, I thought it was about time we followed her footsteps.
A SENSE OF WONDER

If I had influence with the good fairy

who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children,

I should ask that her gift to each child in the world

be a sense of wonder so indestructible

that it would last throughout life,

as an unfaililing antidote

against the boredom and disenchantments of later years,

the sterile preoccupation

with things that are artificial,

the alienation from the sources of our strength.
Rachel Carson

Thanks for sharing with us.
I love kids who look ambitious and graceful.
Thanks

Over the last few weeks I've taken 94 pictures of my wee ones but decided to share the ones from yesterday first...."the wonder of them all".
Shah....they are full of grace...that's the "wonder of it all"!
Thought you would enjoy Deb....they're just the age of your grandbaby!!!!
I'm going to share this with my daughter who is in her internship as a school counselor for early elementary.
Absolutely. I am thrilled that you give this to your kindergartners. It has been depressing over the years to see what kindergarten has become in some districts and how many children have few experiences with nature. I taught 4 year-olds for several years and I tried to give them as many natural experinces as possible.
I love it Roy when you drop by my page...you dear friend, "have kept that wonder"!
"Romping with children" and discovering the secrets of nature Bobbi is probably one of the most satisfying things I do in life.
Thanks Linda for taking the time to "download"....I feel honored that you would take the time.
Sandy, I'm glad I brought a smile to your face.

Every child is so amazing, and as you have realized, how crucial their first experiences at "organized education" can be. Through this essay there is no doubt the children have made it! The world is a much better place with teachers like you, and flit is right!, millions of children could benefit from the experience of a gifted educator like yourself. Thank you for sharing your words and photo essay, looking forward to lots more!!
I'm part of the glitch - Gather doesn't send me updates to my real mailbox about people who comment on my articles. I always received them before video - but once video came, it was like I didn't exist.
thought you might like my post from a different perspective... Here's my link.
