Celebration, Florida, that is...
After thirteen consecutive days of way too much rain, the rain let up on Friday, and we were blessed with an amazing weekend. On Friday evening, we went to Sea World, Saturday we had errands to run and went to the mall. :( We bought absolutely nothing there, but did check out some mattresses.
Sunday afternoon, we went to Celebration, which seems to be the place we run to, to completely shut out the world and just chill. We needed that, and we were not disappointed.
The recent rains have filled the lake, above any level we have seen since Tropical Storm Fay came through last summer and just stayed with us for days upon days. Whether that's why there was "extra" wildlife to be seen this time, or not, I'm not sure... but there was plenty!
I had an iced coffee under the big oak tree hung with Spanish Moss at Starbucks, and then we went for a good walk, all the way around the lake and then some. I hope you'll join me as I show you around.

While still sipping my iced coffee, I watched the ducks, who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying our drier weather.
I also spotted this little guy, who didn't run away, though I didn't try to get any closer than this. I love squirrels, but they don't make easy subjects!

The Canna lilies we saw at first didn't seem as pretty as usual, though they were still very welcoming.

The lily pads were abundant, but unfortunately, left a musty odor in the air, much like how my refrigerator smells when I return home from a two week vacation only to be reminded that I didn't use up that bunch of broccoli in the crisper drawer before leaving...

You can really see how murky the water was in some of these shots... no wonder it didn't smell fresh!

I love the fountain at Celebration. Here, I tried to shoot it from a different angle than I have before, but my timing was off, and it was barely spouting.

As we rounded the lake, I found the beautiful Cannas, and my husband, after rolling his eyes, helped me by holding one toward me so I didn't have to risk dropping my camera in the water just for the shots.

'One of the things I love, here in Florida is the very tall palms which seem to dominate the landscape in some areas, or simply stand out from the rest of the landscape in others. It's hard to get a full shot of any of them, but on this gorgeous day, I enjoyed the blue sky as a backdrop to the dramatic treeline.

Where the lake meets the marsh, my husband spotted this, and pointed it out to me.

And then he took the camera from me and decided to brave the danger for a better shot...

I appreciated the effort, but even though this gator was only about 3 feet long, he could have drawn plenty of blood if he had wanted to...
Usually, there are lots of Muscovy Ducks hanging around the lake. This day, I didn't see any other than this pair, loitering by the bench.

They aren't shy at all. They don't exactly pose for the camera, but they tolerate people well.

Isn't this hen just the sweetest thing?

I deleted a bunch of the following shots, thinking they were just out of focus, before I realized that the standing water and the reflection of it (which I'd never seen before, here) was what made it look that way.

I almost missed this guy, and was very grateful my husband pointed him out to me. I'd never seen one this close, and he let me get within just a few feet of him.

Isn't he beautiful? He let us watch for several minutes before he took flight.

And then I was back to looking at trees again, but this time, more watchful for something moving or sitting in the branches.

The greens are greener after all the rain, and the blue sky was just the bluest possible...

This beauty was a little more shy than most of the wildlife that day...

And this guy was less shy than any of the others...

In fact, I'm certain these are the best squirrel shots I've gotten.

Everywhere along the lake, there is thick foliage and underbrush.

And more of that standing water...

The small adjoining lake was so calm that it almost looks like this photo is upside-down.

These were pretty, but the purple flowers stood out more than what shows in the photo.

I don't know what these next flowers are, but I feel I should! I was fascinated by them.

More tall trees...

Let me just stay quiet for a while. Walk in silence and enjoy...

I used to think the Ibis was ugly, but I've grown quite fond of it since moving here...

Can you see the silvery moon in this next shot?

Looking back at the lake as we headed back into the trees...

Here, I spotted the gator first. He's bigger than the last one, but we didn't get nearly as close. (We do have a bit of common sense.)

I love banana trees... I'd always loved them, even before I saw them in the "giant" form I see here.

Here's the moon again... can you make it out?

Back where we began, we stood and talked to a fisherman for a few minutes before heading back home.

It was a day which truly made me "feel" the name of this lovely, peaceful place.
Celebration.

fantastic photo essay...... La Flo ree dah can be beautiful.....and gators can really boogie when they want to......
Thanks for walking with me! Gators are fascinating, for a girl from South Dakota.
Fabulas post you photos and words blended in so well I felt a small breeze!
Thanks so much, Jules...
What an exciting spot! Glad you had a good day.
It is a great place, Sherrie, and has such a great atmosphere. You just wouldn't expect such a place to be where you find it.
Neat! :o)
Jean, I thought of you when I chose some of these shots!
Makes me long to go back.
I want a house in Celebration when I grow up :-)
Cristina, my husband says Celebration reminds him of Pleasantville... like stepping out of reality into a bygone era. I think that's because the neighborhood is so much like the one he grew up in, in Virginia. It doesn't remind me of where I grew up, but I can enjoy it through his eyes, and it is a lovely place.
Pretty photos and essay. We've had several days without rain and in this heat, the grass is already browning.
Marianne, we are still very green but it won't last long if the heat doesn't let up. It's not really even cooling down well at night.
Great photo essay Julie.
One thing, I don't care for squirrels! The take one bite out of a tomato and move on to the next. I've lived in this home for 14 yrs, without one siting of them. It makes me not want to move back out into the squirrel world.
Funny, t b! I used to miss them terribly when I lived where they did not. And my cats think they are just the most entertaining things around.
What a beautiful place, I just love your photos. Looks like a little piece of paradise. You really got to seem some wonderful sights.
Thanks so much for posting to my group.
It is just that, Nana. And just minutes away, which makes it even better.
Thank you so much for allowing me to come along on your hike. Gorgeous photos and essay made me feel like I was there.
What a lush, "alive" and beautiful environment, my friend.
Wow Julie, reading this made me feel peaceful too. I feel like I could stay somewhere like that all day! Such a lovely area, I can see why you love it! Even though we went to Panther's Creek on Sunday, I still feel like I haven't been out enough this year. Maybe tonight I can talk Mike into a walk in the woods with the doggies. I love being out in nature! {{HUGS}}
Wow, great essay! So many different yet beautiful captures. Thanks for sharing!
:) wishing you laughter
Beautiful photo essay! It all looks so peaceful and quiet.
Why can't I live in Florida and enjoy these wonderful scenes? :(
I don't know, Ryan. Why can't you? The winters are pretty incredible, too.
What a spectacular photo essay you have here Julie! It just takes my breath away. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it... Oh how I wish I could go there someday. Thank you so much for sharing. :) P.S. I noticed how you love to take photos. You do a great job of it too! Taking scenic /wildlife photos happens to be one of all time favorite hobbies... :)
Cheryl, you are welcome to come for a visit! Thank you...
Lovely pictures, Julie... it makes me actually want to visit Florida (I'm not a fan of high heat and humidity, and except for a longing to take Jimmy to Disney World one day, I have honestly had no real interest - but these beautiful photos make me think maybe I've missed something!).
Lisa... I am a bit confused by Gather lately. If I had not gotten notification of Fran's comment, below, I would not have known you commented. It seems to pick and choose what it tells me about.
Rest assured, if you ever decide to visit, I'd make a place for you. We do have an awesome pool, so the heat is a little easier to bear than it could be.
awesome and beautiful photos, you have quite a skill with the damera!
Thank you much, Fran. I think it may be more like, I have a good camera and it's hard to take a bad photo of the subjects I choose. But I'll take the compliment anyway. :)
Spectacular images. Reminds me of my 30 years in FL. Good job with this essay!
What a spectacular walk. I can see why the place is called Celebration. It's beautiful and is full of life. Wonderful!
That is an awesome photo-essay!!
pictures this pretty deserved a 2nd look!!
Great essay! As many times as I have been to Orlando, I have never been to Celebration. Never realized it was that nice.
Great shots. I would freak out being so near the gators but all else is stunning. Thanks for these pics. Still raining in NH....haven't seen steady sun for WEEKS!
An amazing photo essay thanks so much Julie.
My friend lives in a community in New Port Richey that is designed like Celebration.
A great photo essay, my dear friend. I am so glad that you live in a places that feeds your spirit and restores it, as well.
Any updates on Jesse, by the way?
I speak to him almost daily; he sounds at peace. Nothing earth-shattering on the job front, though he has not "seriously" been looking because of the holiday week and the work he was doing for his aunt. He is sounding less depressed than he has in years, though. Thanks for asking. and thanks for coming along on my walk. Heading back there again, in a few minutes...
That all sounds very encouraging, Julie. Fingers still crossed for him.
