Do You Know What This Is? Photos

Some people wake up to an alarm clock, clock radio, rooster crowing, or just by habit.  I wake up each morning to the honking of a Canadian Goose.  I've posted his photo and those of his Misses and his neighbors with their five gosling. 

This morning, as I looked across the pond to check up on the one goose still sitting on her nest, I saw this guy sitting at the water's edge.  I'm sorry, I don't have any idea what kind of duck he is.  I looked through the bird book and nothing really looks like him.  I am hoping someone reading this article will recognize the species and let us all know.  I am assuming it is a duck since he has webbed feet.

This isn't very good for identification purposes, but I liked the reflections, it was the first shot, it was through the screen, and I like to share.

 

He thinks this is his better side.

Now perhaps from these shots someone will recognize it and let me know please?  I zoomed in.

OK, so they all look pretty much the same, just different views of his head which kept turning from side to side.  I think he was looking for breakfast. 

I never know what I'm going to see outback so I've got to start learning the names of these great visitors that amuse me every day.

You can see the goose still sitting on her nest right behind this guy to the left in the first two photos. It's that patch of white with a little black above.

I have no idea but I'm amazed that the nest is so whitel It's like they must use thier chest feather to make it. The nest looked white inside and out. Interesting pictures, thanks.

Hey there! I love research and I believe this is a Cormorant.

Cormorant Information

Length: 30 - 35"

Habitat: Coastal bays, estuaries, and islands; rivers, freshwater lakes, ponds, swamps, reservoirs. Requires undisturbed area for nesting.

Diet: Mostly fish, including both saltwater and freshwater fish; crustaceans, salamanders, snakes, sea worms.

Marianne he has two legs, one is tucked up. I took these one right after the other, that's why they all look pretty much the same. You know how they take off in an instant and I wanted to find out what it was. DH said it was a Cormorant but most of the others we have seen before didn't look like this. Just like a lot of the birds we see, they seem to come in a variety of appearance.

Linda, now that I know what it is I have read a little and it looks like it does turn entirely black when it matures, but I still can't find out what age that would be.

Lori, LOL, you need to tell us about the pigeon. There are many varieties and colors and they also like to live in a variety of places.

Lori I'm chuckling myself just thinking about your vision! I haven't been near the el stop in so long. They have spikey things to keep the pigeons away? Do they work? Poor little pigeons. Frankford Ave wouldn't be the same without them. Who would put the white spots on the avenue? Thanks for the chuckle!

It looks like Elsie got it right. To me, it looked like a cross between a duck and a heron! (ha, ha!)
I was going to say I haven't a clue but I see that thanks to Elise now we've all learnee something great! :-) Instead I'll say, you did a fantastic jon capturing this fellow!
