So, there I am, naked on a table. What, naked? On a table?
Yes, naked, on a table. It was my birthday and the Spa I go to let’s you in for free on your birthday. My aunt joined me for an evening of soaking, relaxing, and warmth. She also bought me a Korean Body Scrub—something I’ve had done once before, but it was a few years ago.
Basically, after soaking in a 104Ëš tub and sweating in a steam room, you go lay on a table, completely naked. Then, a woman scrubs your entire body for you. It is kind of awkward at first, but a good way to just let go of your body image issues. When you are surrounded by a lot of naked women, all with completely different body types and sizes, it seems silly to want to hide and be modest. I can’t believe it has taken me this long (27 years) to finally feel comfortable with my body. I used to avoid even changing my shirt in front of my best friend, now I can walk around naked with a bunch of strangers.
Anyway, back to being naked on the table. The moment Mai (my scrubber) began scrubbing my body, I thought, “Wow, what a job.” Can you imagine this as your job? She scrubs naked bodies every day. Crazy.
Before I continue telling the Body Scrub story, let me explain what the room looks like. It isn’t a private room, but is set off from the room of pools and saunas, separated by curtains (which by no means keep you hidden from the eyes of those relaxing in the pools). The tables are lined up in a row, so you can watch others being scrubbed during your own scrubbing if you wish. I don’t really watch because I like to keep my eyes closed during the scrub. It is relaxing to just close your eyes and let your mind wander—but, I still see glimpses of other scrubs. It’s hard to miss.
Okay, I was naked on the table. When Mai began scrubbing me, I had to wonder what in the world she was scrubbing me with: a metal scouring sponge? Ouch. Then it began to feel good. It hurt so much that it felt good. If you ever read The Chronicles of Narnia you might remember the scene in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader when Eustace Scrubb is de-skinned of his dragon body by Aslan. When Aslan sticks his claws deep into the dragon skin and tears it off, Eustace describes how it hurts to his core, but makes him feel fresh and good. I couldn’t keep this thought out of my mind during the first part of the scrub. It hurt, but in the good way.
After scrubbing every inch of my body, including some places that made me blush (no matter how comfortable I am with my body, it is still strange when a stranger cleans your butt for you), she covered my face with a hot cloth. It felt great! Then, she began massaging my scalp. I almost purred.
After the scalp massage, Mai lathered my body in some silky, soapy concoction. It was so smooth—I imagine it must be what amniotic fluid feels like. I know, it sounds gross, but it must feel like heaven. After lathering me up, she gently rinsed me off with warm water.
Today, my skin is the smoothest it has ever been in my life. It’s amazing. If you ever have the opportunity to get a Body Scrub, do it!
