It's finally official! We have booked our condo on Sanibel and our flights to and from Fort Myers are set! My daughter and I are so excited that we are counting down the days... We will be flying out of here 2 weeks from tomorrow!
We have been working on our packing list, learning all we can about Sanibel & Captiva, and figuring out what we want to do while there...
My daughter and I need something to read on the plane, as we decided not to take our electronic devices... Go figure, my 7 year old would rather read than play Gameboy, VSmile, or Nintendo DS... She read all of the Junie B Jones books during the school year and has started on The American Girl books... I think she's set bookwise...
However, I am not much of a reader... Sad I know... The last book I read, I scoured the internet and book stores to find... I paid well over $100 just to get my hands on the book, which my husband thought was insane... Once I opened the book, I did not put it down or take a break until I had read every word... That book was Someone Cry For The Children-the story of the Girl Scout murders...
We visit the library frequently, but most of my time there is spent reading to and helping my three year old son... I have looked for a book or two to indulge in, yet nothing really captures my attention...
So my dear Gather friends, I turn to you for assistance... I need a few great reads to occupy my time in the air...
I don't know what I really prefer, but I know I am not really into romance or sci-fi... Stephen King scares me immensely...
Television or movie wise, I like crime, romantic comedy, comedy, and drama... Some of my favorites are CSI, Desperate Housewives, and reality based crime...
When I was young, I enjoyed The Box Car Children, and a series about the Orphan Train...
I am desperately in need here of a few books that will catch and keep my attention!!! So what would you recommend and why? Don't forget to include the author!
Thanks for all your help!

Morgan's Run by Colleen McCullough - this is a historical fiction about how Austrailia was setup & inhabited by convicts. This book draws you in & has you follow the life of Richard, and how he ends up as a convict.
Too Deep for Tears Kathryn Lynn Davis - a tear-jerker somewhat, a love/travel story that is great.
If you like memoirs, I can come up with a whole other list!
Did you get in on the BOC? I couldn't get the order form to process as usual :-(
Janet Evanovitch is popular - her mystery series is numbered in the title. "One for the Money" is the beginning. The series is well known for it's humor.
James Patterson is almost always a favorite.
As someone with kids you might enjoy "The Big over easy" by Jasper Fforde. The main character solves nursery rhyme related crimes. It's definitely fantasy, but it's also funny.
The older ones are funnier than the newer ones in my opinion.
One true crime book that I couldn't put down is Will to Murder written by Gail Feichtinger. The book is about the murder of Elizabeth Congdon - a wealthy woman who lived in the Glensheen Mansion in Duluth.
Feichtinger is an attorney who can really tell a story - and this one is a page-turner.
Someone mentioned Michael Gruber and although I haven't read The Forgery of Venus, I intend to. Gruber's earlier novel The Book of Air and Shadows was a good read.
For something very literary - and fascinating - that will keep you turning pages is the recently published (in the U.S. anyway) The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng. It take place during the Japanese invasion of China (WWII) and is simply beautiful.
If you want a love story that is also good writing, you might consider The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans. Again, not a likely pick for me - but someone recommended it and I blew through it in less than two days - as a full-time working single mother no less. It was kind of fluffy - but good fluffy.
Happy reading!
For you, something by James Patterson. such as _First to Die_. Patterson writes murder mysteries with unusual plot twists.
Enjoy your trip!
I love all of James Patterson books. Gets me on the first page.
I love anything by Debbie Macomber. She is somewhat romance, but some of her books are family based. The Shop on Blossom Street is awesome. It's dealing with a girl who is recovering from cancer and opens up a knitting shop. Throught he shop she meets a group of ladies from the local area that come in for her classes. It's a wonderful book and the first in a series.
Thanks for all your suggestions!!!
Dorine~I hear you on the Winnie The Pooh books! I have my mother's old ones that my daughter loves to read!

Here is a link to see all of them! I even love them as an adult!
for something lighter, you might try The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Series by Alexander Mccall Smith. These are light detective stories set in Botswana.
