Herbie Hydrant is a GREAT gift for the kids or grandkids!!! The first time I saw it, it was upwards of $50. I did happen upon it while Christmas shopping in 2006, and it was on sale for $15. At the time, I purchased 3 of them. Two days later my friends were on the site and the price was back up to around $50.
This fire hydrant looking device is so fantastic for the kids, for us paranoid adults, and the fire department or police (in case of emergency). It is a flashlight, timer, alarm, and holds important information. With it comes a postcard to send to your local fire department letting them know your household has the product. I did call our local fire station and they had no idea what the product was, but once I explained it, they loved the concept.
Basically in the event of a power outage, fire, or other scary situation, the children can pick the hydrant up off the base for a flashlight. The alarm will sound (it is loud) alerting you or anyone else to their situation and whearbouts. The timer keeps track of how long it has been off the base, which could be crucial in the event of smoke inhalation. Even if the child were to collapse, the hydrant keeps sounding off...
The compartment for critical information is quite small and hidden, which is a little bit of a negative for me. However, you can fit a few pieces of paper (about business card size) in it. So the basics can typed up where it is legible and put in.
I purchased one for each of the kid's rooms and one for my stepson to take to his house. The first week was a tad irritating with my toddler thinking it was hilarious to make the hydrant alarm go off at the most inopportune times, but he quickly learned that it is for an emergency only. The kids have always known our fire plan, but this gave them confidence and squashed the fears they have of the possibility of having to get out of the house in the night without us. They know that we can find them quickly when they have their hydrants.
I noticed it was on sale again today and thought I would spread the word. I love the concept of this device and the added confidence and feeling of security. The price is excellent at $4.99. It is an excellent birthday present or Easter basket item!!! Santa is the one who actually gave it to the kids which really drove the message of the importance in taking the whole fire drill routine seriously. My children are now 3, 6, and 10 and all have birthdays quickly approaching. They still love their hydrants!!!
