recycling fun

The kids want to recycle cans now...  At our old house, we had a recycling bin that the city picked up, now we do not have that option...

So we have been making an effort to save aluminum cans to recycle...  The kids LOVE crushing the cans!!!  We have can crushing contests and play games while we are crushing cans...  The other day one of the kids got a can stuck on their shoe, which turned into "can shoe" races and "can tap dancing" competitions....  The eldest was running down the sidewalk with cans stuck to his shoes and actually threw sparks...  That was hilarious...  I think we'll be recycling cans for a while-seeing as how tired the can games make them!!!

Do you have any other can game ideas???  How do you get your children involved in recycling???

I don't have kids, but I do make sure to recycle cans. It's like pulling teeth, though, to get my boyfriend to crush the cans.

Melissa- if your bf is competitive, line the cans up and see who can crush the line first... My husband crushed his line and then went after mine... Oh I am so devious!!!

This is a great way to make it fun for the kids. I'm glad to hear about it. Don't know how I'll use it yet, but it will come in handy to have this in memory. Plus it sounded like a lot of fun. Good for you and the children.

I don't have any game ideas. But we do saved cans to be recycled. My husband finally hung up the can crusher on sunday. Now we have tons of cans to crush. All the kid slove doing it.

I love the can tap dancing!!! Who needs a gym??? Perhaps I should do it closer to the street and put out a bucket for tips... Wonder if I'd get any... HA HA HA

How about doing a can toss like a beanbag toss. Or stack up the cans and see who can get them to fall from throwing a small pebble or something from a distance? Or just aiming for the recyling bin from a distance? We always made stilts out of cans. Punch holes in both sides of the unopened side, pull a thick cord through and walk on two cans, one on each foot. Use sturdy cans! Have races that way but be careful.

My husband used to do the same thing when he was a kid. We save cans, too, but we have a crusher that can hold up to six cans at one time. Granted it cost us $25, but it is worth it since my husband collects more cans on the road than I do here at home! He will bring home 14 or more plastic grocery bags in one week! He still crushes the large cans with his foot, but the rest go into the crusher!

I don't have kids, or live in an area that recycle. I guess I would make some kind of a game out for the kids. Maybe a chart with some stars for the one that did it the most each week.

kudos to you for teaching your kids to recylcle! Mine are now grown, but that would have been a neat idea, if there were still young. I know I had fun as a kid doing things like that. Seems kids today don't quite have the imagination we did when we were younger. We could spend hours having fun and not bug our parents every minute, or cry "were bored".

This week, I think the eldest wants to build can towers and knock them down... Not sure how he wants to do it, but we'll give it a go!!! We could do that all day!!!

It sure sounds like fun. I don't have any game suggestion. My sons age 5 and 19 months are into recycling too though, we (that is I) pick up cans when were are walking, but they point them out to me, and we talk about how these grown people should learn to use a garbage can.
