At first I thought it was a mistake. I was checking Simon & Schuster's website - SimonSays, to make sure it listed three upcoming appearances to promote my novel, "The Way Life Should Be." Oddly enough, the appearances weren't there.
That wasn't the only problem. The price of my book was wrong ($24.95 not $14). So was the publication date (Feb. 1, 2008 not Sept. 18, 2007). Then I noticed something really strange: I had Googled my way onto SimonSaysAustralia.
And that's how I learned my novel was being released halfway around the world.
I was pretty excited, but waited until I confirmed the news with my editor before I told anyone (not counting my wife, my brother, and hundreds of complete strangers in the Knoxville area).
Most people greeted the news with enthusiasm. "Does that mean you'll be traveling to Australia?"
Well, maybe Melbourne, Florida, provided we can squeeze it into our next visit to my mother's.
To be honest, I have no idea how significant this is. I do know that not every American novel Simon & Schuster publishes gets distributed in Australia, though plenty do. I also know Touchstone didn't print a separate edition; they just shipped books from the United States. Still, my editor said it was great news, and who am I to argue?
So please join me in tipping a can of Foster's Lager in celebration. And if you know anybody in Australia, please, please, please encourage them to buy my book!

Hey, you might be in some other parts of the world that you don't know about yet, too!
When we were missionaries in the Philippines we found a couple of things we didn't expect to find--like Louisiana Tobasco Sauce made about fifty miles down the road from here.
No telling where your book could be.
I am trying to finish Grisham's "The Innocent Man" so that I can read The Way Life Should Be.
My wife and I were both impressed with how nice the book looks.
Can't wait to read it!

Fabulous news!
Bethany, I love Louisiana Hot Sauce!
Frank, how am I supposed to concentrate on work when you keep bringing up images like that?
And Julie and Tom, thanks for the excellent marketing help!
I have a few contacts in Austrailia that I will let know about your book being released.
Big Congratulations to you.....
It's available online in England and Canada through Amazon.
Good luck! Maybe you'll end up number one there and get translated into a few hundred languages and with your own private jet.:) We're all rooting for you!
(BTW - Fosters is good stuff).
Today Australia...tomorrow the world...I'll pass on the availability of your book there to Evy Cole (Gambling For Good Mail) She has scads of relatives there.
How exciting for you. I lived in Australia for 6 years, back in the '80's, but I have a few contacts. I'll see what I can do, and best of luck with sales!
