If the last two elections have taught the people of this country anything it is to look past political affiliation to the issues and the stance each candidate takes on them. Are the days of straight-line voting over? In my opinion yes.
The latest batch of presidential hopefuls have many issues to contend with.
Illegal immigration. By now it is pretty apparent that the laws that we have now are not going to be enforced but the problems still remain. Whether you support amnesty or not I think everyone can agree that something needs to be done. The last four presidents have turned a blind eye to this issue, which is why it is at such a boiling point now.
The war in Iraq. This was approved by both Democrats and Republicans. Yes the lawmakers and the people of the United States were supplied with questionable intelligence by the current administration to gain support for this invasion. Our troops are there but we have no clear-cut guidelines to what is going to happen and exactly what "winning" this war means. Whether or troops remain or are pulled from Iraq and Afghanistan our next president is going to have to come up with a firm plan. I want a timeline. I want a clear definition of what victory really means in Iraq.
George Bush is one of, if not the most, unpopular president in history. Democrats are using this to their advantage and Republicans are shying away from him. Will this guarantee a Democratic victory? No. These candidates need to realize people are looking for a leader that has a firm plan on the direction to take this country. I have had enough of the mud-slinging commercials pointing out who did what and to whom. I want a leader that will tell me what they will do not what others have done. I want a leader that will follow through on the promises they made to get elected.
The people of this country are looking beyond the politics to the issues. I think it's time the candidates did the same.

Its all about the delivery of the job not the promises of it.

he is not the least popular president ever. Bush's approval rating has hit 26% at the lowest.
Nixon hit bottom at 23%, and Truman at 22%.
What also must be considered is that this data was all based solely on Gallup polls - except for the data for Clinton and Bush. Naturally, more polls increases the likelihood of the highest and lowest being further from the median.
And also of interest, George Bush has also enjoyed the highest approval rating of the last 12 presidents, at 92%. What a roller coaster ride.
As for the belief that we won't just vote on party lines... you have far more faith in the masses than I think is warranted. Bush = Republicans in far too many minds. Plus, when you have a second term president, it leaves little limelight for any other members of the party to shine. The opposing party doesn't have that problem. Which means name recognition is heavily in favor of the opposition party.
Usually parties switch after a second term president. In this case, with so many people upset at Bush, I would be surprised to see a Republican win.
Of course, that just means those who do want a candidate other than whoever gets the Democratic nomination to win just need to work that much harder. Nothing's impossible.
I don't want a timeline, though. That would just give too much information to those who wish us harm.
Hillary will bring disaster to the Dems.
This will be a very interesting election year I am sure.
With Obama you have a crap shoot of a chance, everything comes into play except a few of the hard core red states. He's bi-racial, goes to an African American church in Chicago and has a African American wife. To all of that I say, so what. Someone is going to be the first in everything and if not now, then when?
Just because Bush will go down as the worst President in history and many think he is UN-AMERICAN. That will not guarantee a Democrat will win.
"Do not fight for a dying regime. It is not worth your life." - President George W. Bush
That leaves Dr. Ron Paul as the ONLY legitimate candidate in the field, IMHO.
Guy ... only? What about Tancredo or Thompson? are they that far off?
We don't know who's here, how many terrorists will you all allow? Amnesty for illegals is one argument. Security for this country is the other. Can't have one without the other. The issues!
It boggles the mind.
You mean Bush won according to the rules and laws of election system that we have been using since the nation was founded? Imagine that?
If the current GOP candidates can successfully distance themselves from the war vote and Bush (and I think they will) then they have a very good shot.
If Hillary is the Dem nominee I think it all but ensures a GOP victory. I won't say it absolutely does because I'm sure the clintonistas will try their best to rig the election by having dead people, illegal aliens and repeat voters for Hillary. I think the liberals in this nation are severly underestimating the seething hatred for this woman out there among the masses that is eventually going to bubble over come November 2008. But hey it's going to be the first time I can honestly say I've ever had fun at a funeral as I watch the Dems seal their chances by running her.
Can you spell I-R-O-N-Y?
YOU SAID IT HUN!!!!
BTW--George is the most unpopular president because he doesn't care about polls and doesn't bow to them to make decisions as many other have done in the past. He does what he thinks is right, even if to many of us think it isn't. Have you noticed the way Hillary shifts, and Rudy slides, etc. Unfortunately the ones who stay the course of their convictions like Huckabee, Ron Paul, John McCain, and Biden will not get the nomination unless they start bowing to public opinion and of course the big time investors. If you want to see who isn't for the average person, check out who has the biggest treasure chests.
