Hi all from the soggy midwest,
I have been wanting to write about buying land some more so here goes...
If your thinking about buying land, you will probably want enough for at least a garden, some animals, space for a chicken house, maybe rabbit pens, pasture, a barn for goats, cows, etc.
It's also important if your going to have to work a job or two to make sure there are some jobs you can work at in the area you want to live.
Also land prices can be high due to the competition for rural properties and high taxes.
Can you fulfill your dreams on the land your looking to buy? Are you going to live there full time, have a good garden to grow food in, raise animals, have a woodlot for firewood?
So how much land do you want to buy? A half acre will allow you to keep a few bee hives, have a fruit orchard, keep a few grazing animals such as goats, weaner pigs,3-12 hens, and some rabbits. If you have water you could even have some ducks or geese. You can plant your orchard around the perimeter of the land so you can use the interior land for pasture. A 1/2 acre is really very small but workable.
On an acre, not considering your house, lawn, etc, you could have a breeding sow in place of two weaner pigs and bring in a profit with the piglets. You could have your goats or a small breed of cows. You can also consider raising some goslings, chickens and rabbits. Your animals will be able to get a greater part of their diet from grazing.
On two acres you would have enough to comfortably pasture a cow, grow a substantial garden and orchard.
On ten acres, you could install a couple of ponds for raising fish and have a good selection of waterfowl. You will have a nice amount of land to have a good sized garden, grow grain and other crops in rotation, having your pasture and ponds as well.
Ok so if you have twenty acres of fertile land, you could garden and contribute to your income by selling a lot of what you grow.
These are just food for thoughts but if your like me, you can do anything your heart desires on 1/2 acre of land. You can do miracles with nothing. So just remember this is just stuff to get your creative juices flowing.
I have been working on the business side of things with my business at www.shekinah-mercantile.com. I thought I'd share what I do to make a living. I am making a lot of changes and if you have an online business youknow the work is never done.
I placed a link below(let me know if it doesn't work for some reason)
