I have continued to learn that homesteading has more than one meaning.
At one point in time it meant qualifying for free government land when you lived on the land, or built a house on it. Now it means living on the land and to some degree producing to meet your needs, especially food. When we have been accustomed to living a city life it can be as challenging learning to do that as it probably was for those crossing the plains to as the pioneers did. People homestead in all kinds of places. Some try their best to do it right in the city where they live and some go to the mountains or wherever they choose to do it. Some go to the mountains of Appalachia, some in the western U.S., some in the N.E. parts of the U.S., some in the Midwest, some in northern California, Alaska, Canada, Mexico. But wherever you decide to go, if you can grow a garden and raise some animals your a homesteader and a blessed individual.
What are homesteader types? They come from all walks of lives, all persuasions, all different kinds of convictions and are in all age groups.
So back to buying land again. You need to be able to grow your own food to survive. You need a big enough bit of land to grow a garden, raise some animals, have out buildings such as a hen house, maybe rabbit pens, pasture and barn if you plan to raise goats and/or cows. It's important to think ahead and maybe you will have to work two jobs for awhile to get there.
I have a friend who works until early afternoon. Her husband stays home and tends things on the land, helps with homeschooling and so forth. When she gets home she picks up where she left off when she left in the morning. The kids are old enough to help with feeding the animals, gathering eggs, etc. You can do this if it's your heart's desire.
It's important if your going to have to work to make sure you can get a job(s) in your area. Too many have invested in land and then can't find a job. So do take this into consideration. If your going to be or are self-employed make sure you have enough coming in to cover basics.
Until next time,
