Reminds me of the ancient mythology among the Greeks and their seers. When a question was asked of the human all-seeing voices of the gods, their answers were so vague as to allow any interpretation and left the askers of the questions to find their own answers. The Civil War was unique among conflicts in that a nation warring upon itself then had to regroup and find commonality in order to survive and grow. It was a long and much more bitter regrouping than the original war because there were so many families torn apart, destroyed, divided and injured that the process was hindered on every plane. I wonder if the regrouping and bonding could happen in today's society.

One note on a people coming together after being divided by war. The slavery issue was a money issue. The South was concerned about losing money if the slaves they held were freed. After the war the carpetbaggers and others seized and stole what they could from the defeated region. Most of the discrimination that followed (on allsides) was motivated by money issues. It was money that split them and money that delayed the reconciliation.

Today we are also divided in many ways by a war. Not on our shores (9/11 was terrorism by a few not an act of war it seems to me) but still divisive. We are divided mostly by money still in so many ways. Yet who is taking action to change the nature of money so that it becomes a root of goodness rather than a source and means whereby evil is spread?

Interesting take on money being the root of all evil (or "the love of money is the root of all evil"). There were many reasons why the Civil War happened, including the relative basis for the economies in the North and South, tariffs, and intertwined in those were the slavery issue.

Perhaps blaming money for all of our ills is oversimplifying the situation. Perhaps some personal responsibility is in order.
