For now. Of course, when your friend eliminates that enemy, he may then decide that it is not worth being your friend any more.

History shows that when two people are involved a solution can be reached fairly easily - yes or no or go apart - but when the third person enters the scene an alliance usually forms between two of the three and one feels alone and threatened by the joining of the two. Here is where the lying, attempts to win one of the others over to another side, facet, point, etc. and one of the persons is always like the ball in the old video game PONG - always bouncing from one point to another in search of the "truer" truth. We are seeing this now as the campaign participants plead their cases hoping to draw another bouncing ball to their court. I personally need more than just a backdrop to become a bouncer for one or the other at this point.

Rick - this is so true, and has been proven time and time again (simply look at our previous and current relationships with Iraq, Iran, Russia, etc, etc.).

What you say is often true. I like to think that friendship isn't quite so opportunistic as Lincoln's quote might suggest. We can disagree with our friends as long as we respect them and they respect us.

A good book that talks about Lincoln's attitudes towards enemies is "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Kind of the "keep your friends close...and your enemies closer" philosophy.

Not sure I fully agree with this one. Sometimes friends get mad at friends for the wrong reason....are you supposed to follow?

I disagree on this one, after all, it seems if this was true everyone would have a whole lot of enemies.

Good thought provoking quote but I disagree with it. My enemies are few and the ones I have I pray for. Several of my friends will hold on to their anger for ever and not ever bring their dispute to resolution.

Jeanne - I see you found the October 19th update on this quote. The funny thing is that I tried to come up with people who I could classify as "enemies" and I absolutely could not come up with even one. I know I've ticked off people over the years, and have been ticked off by others, but for someone to be an "enemy" it takes an active interest in making and maintaining them as such. I just don't see it.
