What you say is often true. I like to think that friendship isn't quite so opportunistic as Lincoln's quote might suggest. We can disagree with our friends as long as we respect them and they respect us.
A good book that talks about Lincoln's attitudes towards enemies is "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Kind of the "keep your friends close...and your enemies closer" philosophy.
