A- Question of fair play/ If W. sent this card would you consider him a RACIST??

While reading a local paper i came across this little article.

                                 Bill's postcard to Forget.

   A racially insensitive moment from Bill Clinton's boy-hood is coming back to haunt him, It's a postcard the future president sent to his grandma Edith Cassidy in 1966 showing a black youth eagerly polishing a gigantic watermelon, titled"Hope, Arkansas- Home Of The  Worlds Largest Watermelon".

Clinton, 19 at the time wrote," Dear Mam-maw, I thought i would send you one of your cards just to prove I'm using them! Hope you are well and happy love, Bill.   Online auction- house rrauction .com is selling the card Wednesday.

Clinton wrote this card in the midst of the most active civil-rights movement in American -history. I'm sure there will be no mention of this racist card on the main stream news reports.   Imagine what the media would be saying, if Bush had sent such a vile racist card.

Do you think any of these gutless media people{democrats by desire} will rush to ask Hillary what she thinks about the card. If the racist shoe were are the other foot{W's- I'm sure- Hillary, chuckle, Nancy, Harry, sharp-ton, and pres. moron a day of Iran would be calling for the racist to resign.       Double-Standard, BABY!!!!

Interesting.... I for one am not surprised at this accusation, besides I think you would be hard pressed to find a white person during this time period who didn't belittle black people. I'm not not sure how old you are, but didn't you?

I don't think there is a double standard.... Look at Bill O'Reilly who makes insensitive comments galore and yet he still hold his job.... Even after the charges of sexual harassment were filed against him... Rush Limbaugh caught breaking one of our many drug laws, but again he gets to keep his job....

And, BTW, just for the record, I did not belittle anyone black, white, green or purple in those years. Guess I was raised differently.

Shun, thanks for your time. But the real question i was asking is about a double standard? i say if W. had sent that card the media and democrats would be hollering- Bush is a racist, and this proves it. Also Shun, as far as your assumption that i be littled black people ,because they were black, is a stero-type. I grew up in the Bronx, NY,in the 50's, lived there for 42 yrs. i met people of all colors, from many countries, and i am proud to say, i never treated them any different no matter what the color of their skin was.

Katie, Micky I didn't mean to paint either of you with a broad brush, but what I meant to convey is that the mindset exhibited on this card was the norm, unfortunately.
You may be right Shun. But I can't say as I was not exposed to prejudice in any form while growing up. No insult taken and believe me, none was intended either. I did not even learn about the connotation of African Americans and watermelons, which is awful as I used to tell my Black co-workers, "But I LIKE watermelon too" and they would laugh at me, until I was a young adult. I too grew up in New York City and maybe that's the reason, just as Micky.
Interesting...But I don't see anyone interrogating Fred Thompson on his wife's postcards. So what is the relevance of Bill Clinton's youthful correspondence?

I don't believe Jeri Thompson was ever President of the United States, nor am I aware of Fred promising to give her an "influential" position within his administration should he be elected.

The answer to your question micky is really a very simple one. The reason Bill doesn't get labeled with the "R" word when George would, is that Republican="Bad!" and Democrat="Good!" in the MSM today.

Black Americans are allowed to call themselves the N word. Oh, I forgot Bill really isn't black. Hmm, 1966, was he in the Klan too, if he was he sure has done a 180 degree.
We know Mickey d has never uttered a racist word. Heck, the Republican party is the Party of Lincoln and championed the civil rights movement right? Hate crimes?
Better dig deeper. In the mean time, don't mention W's mom talking about "those" people she doesn't want living near her who need to go to back to La.
THINK! Repubs accusing Dems of bias is like Stalin chastising Bush for torture.

I don't think the card was supposed to have all that racist meaning attached to it when he sent the card to his maw maw. He's a southern guy, Sorry, I just don't understand what the big deal is.

I think they would vote for the Dems. I dont care how old Clinton was when he sent the card. Fact remains that it was sent. Look, at how after all these years, it comes back to haunt Byrd, about his clan connections.
Look, at how the Dream Team brought up racism against Mark Furman, it never goes away. Clinton, is no different than anyone else who has had to wear the title of racist.
I agree with Micky, if Bush had done this, it would be front page news.

remember the time period, as Shun mentioned it was pretty much the norm. As a student of history I always try to remind my students not to judeg the past by the present. I'm no fan of Clinton but that was then...

on the other hand, damn straight this would have been front page news on the MSM if it had been a non Democrat

Thanks Charles, i agree, and you actually ans. the Q. was this a question of a double standard. Rude, Terry, Elizabeth, all tried to defend rather than ans. the Q.. I'm sure if W. had sent this card they would be the first one's calling him a racist,----DOUBLE-STANDARD---AGAIN!!

Actually, Rude, David Duke started out as a Democrat.

Also, Democrats are the ones who held ALL the levers of power in the South after Reconstruction and the (Republican) carpetbaggers left. It was the Democrats who instituted the Jim Crow laws, codifying segregation in the South. The KKK was started and supported by the Democrat power structure that enacted those laws.

To be fair, Truman did desegregate the military after WWII and was an honorable man.

But, it was President Eisenhower, a Republican, who sent the troops into Little Rock to enforce the Court-ordered School Desegregation Plan.

It was George Wallace, a Democrat and Governor of Alabama who stood in the door of the University of Alabama Administration building to prevent black students from registering and said, "Segregation now, segregation forever!"

Our country's racial history is most certainly nothing to be proud of, but in its worst, it wasn't Republicans leading the racist hordes to the burning crosses.
