I have Narcolepsy. All of my life, I've had trouble staying awake in dimly lit areas. MY house is lit up like an xmas tree. Even then, I'd find myself fighting to keep my eyes open while reading, using the computer, watching TV, or driving. I just thought it was because I don't sleep well, because of my back.
I had a sleep study done earlier this month and was told that the results show that I fall asleep quickly and completly skip the first part of the sleep cycle and go dircetly into REM sleep. That's why there are times I wake up during "sleep paralysis". When you are in REM sleep your brain secretes a hormone that paralizes your muscles, this way you don't "act out" your dreams. I wake up, upon occassion, during this time of my sleep cycle. It's EXTREMELY unpleasant, but NOT dangerous, and it's a HUGE indicator of Narcolepsy.
My doctor prescribed Nuvigil, it's a new drug that lasts 12 hours, meaning that you only take it once a day. The older version was taken twice a day. I started taking it on Tuesday, and I have already noticed a HUGE difference. I don't feel like I'm dragging around my house, I don't want to take a nap, and I'm not nearly nodding off at wierd points of the day.
Now, I have to make an appointment for my oldest son. He came into the living room one morning and said that he'd woken up and couldn't move. He'd NEVER heard me discuss this with anyone, and I remember having it happen as a child. It tends to be hereditary and if treated in children can improve their attention, their school grades, and their over all feelings and life. I'd been thinking he might have ADHD, now I believe that it's Narcolepsy. Some of the symptoms are similar. Trouble being still, paying attention, doing things that take patience, etc. Hopefully, I can help him feel better too.

Everyone has sleep paralysis, it's the WAKING UP during it that's uncommon. If you think you MIGHT have a Narcolepsy, you should talk to your doctor. The first thing they'll do is a sleep study. After that, you may get a blood test.
Again, I'm glad that you are feeling better now and at least one problem seems to have been resolved.
So far, I feel a lot better then I have in a LONG time.
I have peace signs EVERYWHERE, including tatooed on my chest!
I need to write a post about Narcolepsy. I didn't know how bad I felt, until I didn't feel that way anymore.
It can be difficult to get a diagnosis, and I'm sure that there have been significant developments over the years for treatment.
She couldn't drive, of course, and we watched out for her, I don't know what it was like, we used to ponder whether she had really exceptional dreams during the sleep phase? Like she couldn't resist sleeping because the dreaming was calling her.
Sending Blessings for restful nights,
Wilka
