I went to a Pet Care Fair today (that photo essay will be along later) and I took my dog, Lady, along with a couple shelter ferrets. Lady is a Rottweiler/Shepherd (or something like that) mix. You'll notice she just looks like a big brown dog.
She's a great dog -- calm, attentive, friendly -- and she enjoys meeting other dogs, animals, people and has a special fondness for little kids.
She was a good girl, too. She laid in the shade under the table most of the time, but would walk out and greet people as they approached the table. She's quiet and calm, and as long as she's with one of her people, she's happy.
It was a rather nice morning (unlike a couple years ago when it was 95 in the shade), but after a while she got hot and tired. After we got home, she sacked out on the waterbed for hours! LOL! I know how she feels!

Scrooge says that that doesn't look like the Lady that was here today.
LOL!
Hehe @ sacking out. Ikwym. She's beautiful, and looks like a big sweetie.
Thanks. She's a great dog. Does tricks, picks up things for me, and barks like a maniac when you move the draperies (???). LOL!
She is pretty, I think in the last picture through the eyes she looks Rott. I love both breeds so she must be a wonderful dog. I think Rotts are laid back and calm from the ones I have had and met.
Yes, I think that calm "happy just to be near you" thing is a Rottie trait. She's always been calm, even as a puppy, and that's been wonderful.
I love German Shepherds. We had two of them when we were on the farm. They were really good with kids too. One of them, the one I liked best was named Lady.
That's pretty cool :) I named her Lady as a goal for her to achieve. I'd say she's finally gotten there. It took a while! LOL! She used to nearly push me down the stairs. O_o
what a sweetie!!! :)
Thanks, Michelle.
She is a beauty, Barb. I have had some wonderful dogfriends in the past, but with cats, and two being over 17 and just not wanting to adapt to something new, I have put offf getting another. I enjoy all my neighbors dogs as friends, tho. :) :) :)
Dogs are great. I love how she automatically protects me and the house with no training at all. I like big dogs because you can hug them without making their eyeballs pop out. :)
Is that what happened to all those Chihuahuas, Barb? ;>)
ROTFLMAO! Okay, I almost choked on my soda! LOL!
Very ladylike.
Heh. Thanks.
Lady is a very beautiful dog!!
Thanks, Cynthia. :)
awww, she is so sweet!
Thank you :)
Hey Barb: she looks like such a sweet natured animal with the most beautiful soft chocolate eyes!
Yes, gotta love those eyes. Very expressive, too. I think dogs like pugs, where their faces are all scrunched up, are at a disadvantage. Your dogs have expressive-looking faces, too. Can you just look at them and tell what they're thinking? :) The ears tell a lot, too. Lady has a particular ear position that means "I'm being a good, obedient dog. See me being obedient?" Heh.
Looks like a good friend to have around although I'd hate to be the one trying to bathe her! Who walks who when you both go out?
Hubby gets to bath her. I'd just take her somewhere and let them do it. Brushing her takes forever and she's constantly shedding. :\ I'm feeding her super high-quality food, so I'm not sure if it's just her breed combo or what.
As for walking, Lady is a good girl. She does not bark at other dogs and she does not pull. She's been obedience trained, and knows how to heel, too. All the dogs I've owned were trained. They don't run out the door if you leave it open, either. In fact, if you leave the door open, Lady thinks it's a trick and she'll go up to the second floor landing and watch. LOL!
Pretty dog
Thanks :)
She's pretty Barb. It is smart to have a dog for protection. I miss ours terribly.
She's a great family dog and her breeds (and sex) make her naturally protective. All I had to do was take her to obedience class so she knew to listen to me. Why don't you get another dog?
Barb, she's lovely! There's no mistaking that stocky Rottweiler build, is there?
She's not quite as stocky as a typical Rottie, but she has the chest of a Rottie! She sounds scary to ME when she barks! LOL! You'd have to be out of your mind to break into a house with a dog that sounded like that. :)
What a great face she has - very welcoming - I'd not think twice about coming up to say "Hello".
Thanks. :) She's attentive with a slow tail wag, which is pretty inviting. However, people who aren't up to any good find that attentiveness frightening!
She's a lovely big brown dog.
Thanks :) She's a good girl.
Breeders of pure breeds look down on mixes but some studies have suggested that they tend to be healthier and have fewer undesirable traits than the pure breeds of their parentage. Over the years we've had both. Lady seems to be a perfect dog for you, if there is such a thing.
My last dog was great, too, and I swear by crossbreeds (two distinct types crossed). I'm not as sure about the Heinz 57 variety of dog, but the crosses sure seem to get the smarts from both sides. Both Lady and my dog before her, Sugar, were exceptionally smart.
I do think some of that was because we talk to our animals as if they were other people. Maybe even more! :) The dogs all seem to get to the point where they understand pretty much everything you say.
I agree that some dogs understand much more than the "experts" claim!
I think that all animals have the capacity to understand a whole lot more than what is generally accepted. I've seen iguanas with personality, which astounds me. I've seen tiny little birds who understand what you're saying. I've known people who had pet cows who knew their name, liked certain people and not others, and were friendly. I think we're underestimated the creatures in the animal kingdom big time.
My daughter had some type of African frog as a pet, and talk about personality! One of my sons had a Burmese python that was a riot!
Beautemous canine, she is. She'd look good in a photo essay with Robert's Streaker!
Thanks :) I think she's pretty, but what I love best isn't on the outside.
