“A Formidable Presence”
I skip over the freshly mowed grass and dash onto the sidewalk…
The towering trees shower autumn’s season with dappled leaves
That grace the mowed lawns, the bowery cottage landscapes, and the howes.
The trees, endowed with such formidable presence,
Awaken my senses to the power of nature’s canopies.
Their lowering branches almost touch the flowering shrubs
Whose dwellers cower when I come near the wooded stems.
They scurry deep below to the bowels of the earth
Where they have stowed themselves long before I came.
Small houses line the streets with flowerbeds galore.
A trowel blade’s handle stands erect like the tall, towering tree next to it ~
Its blade buried in the ground glowering silently
At the earthworms empowering themselves to rise to the earth’s surface.
I watch the mowers of the grass spit the trimmings
To the opposite side of the splendid flowers,
So the growers of the floweriest show in town
Won’t be hampered by the showering of grass cuttings.
I look back at the towering trees and vowed to return one day.
‘Til then, my memory bank will shower me with reminiscent memories,
And I will revel in the debt of gratitude that I owe to Nature.
