Poem: Gertrude and William

Gertrude and William

Two Canadian geese

with downy grey bodies

and black feathered eyes

huddle the curve

of a tractor tire,

out of the snow.

We prepare a straw bed for them

and scatter yellow seed corn

on the barn floor,

and christen them

Gertrude and William.

They free the rest of the flock,

settle with us

and make next year's reservations.

This is an Ohio poem. I used to live on a farm and for several winters when I was a child, there was a pair of Canada geese that would spend the winter in our barn.
