Carol - I have only linited understanding of it, so this is way layman's terms. Perhaps someone else will fill the blanks. RSS feeds allow you to combine content from muslitpe websites into one common area. The only place I have actually used then is on my Google sidebar. When you see content you would like to keep track of, and it offers RSS feeds, you click on it and it will give you the code that you will need to copy and paste into the RSS tool on the google sidebar or whatever offers RSS feed stuffage (see - layman's terms lol). when you paste the code in and save it, for example, a group on Gather, the latest article will appear. I am sure I have totally confused you now, and I hope someone else will come and explain it much better.
Really simple syndication. Its kindof like your maimy gather page, It shows you updates and new stuff on whatever sites you choose to get a feed from. So for this anytime the person you requested a feed from, posted a new article it would show it. But you can do it with any website that offers it. So if you really like a specific blog, or 200 but dont like checking every day to see if it has a new posting you can get an rss feed for all of them and then have them all go to one place.

I only know it is a nuisance to me when I go on my gather home page and have to click off to get rid of it. I am sure it has a good and useful purpose for those who know how to use it. I hope and I assume you got your answers here.

Ooooo I did one of these.....they set up in the same window as favorites in your windows internet explorer and it tells you instantly you click on it if there has been any activity on what you are watching

As has been mentioned above, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. You can read more in the Gather FAQ HERE.
Basically, it allows you to 'subscribe' to the group or member content that you really like, and view that content off Gather, on your Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, etc. home pages, or within a 'news reader'.
