My husband and I use the random pick method. We open a map or travel guide and literally pick a city with our eyes closed. We book a place to stay, do a little reseach on local monuments, parks, cultural attractions and just go. When we get there, my husband, who is a terrific people-meeter gets the skinny on what's cool around the town from the locals...where THEY eat, where THEY go dancing, where THEY relax, what bars THEY frequent, where to buy stuff, etc. We have the best times with this partially planned/partially catch-as-catch-can approach.

In summer - I don't know if it's enough for Alaska. Oregon and Washington State are gorgeous in August and September.

I was on Prince Edward Island Labor Day weekend and a few days afterwards. The weather was incredible and there were NO people. I couldn't believe it.

Hey how about my much beloved Michigan? Ever been here to see the huge sand dunes of Lake Michigan? Or the Maciknac Bridge or Mackinaw Island or the Upper Penninsula? Lots to see and do.

I'd head to NYC! Go on Priceline.Com or one of the other sites, get an inexpensive room at the Hilton on 6th Ave. and live it up in the Big Apple. I'd make that money really stretch, do some sightseeing, shop a little, take in the Central Park Zoo, people watch, some sidewalk food and enjoy the time away.

You didn't mention how much time you could actually spend. You could rent a houseboat for a week and have some left over. Or rent a standard or luxury RV and see things up close and personal, yet in style. If you go to applevacations.com and book all last minute trips, you could probably go on three all-inclusive island trips. So much depends on your interests and time constraints.

I would go to the Grand Canyon. I have been there before but it was about twenty years ago, and then drive thru Monument Valley again. It was wonderful to see places that I had seen in John Wayne Movies.

I too would go to the Grand Canyon, I plan to go their with my family in the fall. I saw it in 1961 en route from NJ to CA. It was the most impressive place I had ever saw. If you haven't seen it in person..GO!!!!

This is challenging because for us as a family of 6 we would not get as far as most folks for a vacation. We would probably spend it on theme park tickets (Disney World, most likely). That would run us around $1,300 for the tickets (seasonal pass, just a few black out dates) and the rest would have to cover the drive, gas, tolls, meals, etc. to reach the parks.

My sister and I went to San Diego a few years ago and I am dying to go back. But I would also like to go to Albuquerque and back to the Grand Canyon. When I was out that way I didn't have enough time to go to Monument Valley, but I would love to go there too. Hmmm, Oregon sounds nice too. Can I come along?
