Promises To My Baby

I will love you as you are,

respecting you as you are given me. 

I will keep you safe and warm,

and make decisions for your care

weighed carefully,

with information and intuition.

I will strive to remember how it is to be small

and helpless,

in a land where you don't speak the language,

dependent on others for everything.

Most of all, I will be

empathic in my parenting.

I will teach you as I would hope to be taught,

kindly.

I will play with you,

laugh with you,

defend you,

and come when you cry for me.

I will believe in you,

nurture you,

and thank my lucky stars for you,

naturally.

I'm not deluding myself that this is actually a poem or anything, I just needed to get these thoughts out, tonight. There's a book by Malika Chopra with a similar title, 100 Promises to My Baby that's worth reading if you like this kind of thing and get the chance. Or it makes a good baby shower gift.

What do you mean no poem or anything?? Lune it is everything that you sought out for it to be and more. It is so very lovely and heartwarming. I don't have any children but if I did, I would read this to them as if it were a song a Lune Wolfsong.

Of course, it's a poem! And a wonderful one! I love these promises! Especially the one to remember how it feels to be small. Beautiful thoughts!
Your poem brought tears to my ears...all the reasons for me..for wanting to have a baby, a baby I know I will never have now that I'm almost 50.

I thought it was a poem and oh, so heart-touching. You zeroed in on what it means to be a mother so well. It's almost like a prayer. Beautiful.

Thank you all. It was one of those cases of being compelled to write something before your mind would rest, but I was tired and not able to polish its awkward spots. And it felt to me last night like more of a prayer, or ... affirmation? - or something.

This is beautiful. I don't think it should be "polished", because it captures the emotion of being a parent and emotions are raw.
