History has always fascinated me. I enjoyed learning in school and on vacation trips to various historical sites around the country. As it turns out, I don't know much about history. Do you?
Short Answer Quiz:
1. Who was Joseph Warren?
2. Who was James Wilson?
3. Where was Fort Necessity and what is its history?
4. Was Benedict Arnold a traitor or a patriot? Why?
Before reading America's Hidden History by Kenneth C. Davis, I would have failed this quiz.
We have all been taught that the early settlers came to America seeking religious freedom, yet none of them - French, Spanish, British, colonists or Indians, respected one another's beliefs. Religion played a large part in the settlement of our country, causing much bloodshed and treachery.
Spinning events in the media was practiced in colonial America. Dr. Joseph Warren's exaggerated reports and inflammatory language qualifies him, quite literally, as a very early "spin doctor."
Knowing that our forefathers were not perfect and harbored the same prejudices we see today shows us that they were very human heroes. They made mistakes, spun the facts, took bribes and were sometimes motivated by greed. Still, they forged a new nation and won freedom from tyranny. It was a long, painful process.
By the way, Benedict Arnold was both patriot and traitor. His story and many others can be found in the pages of America's Hidden History. I highly recommend this book. If you're a history fan, you'll find it irresistible. If you're not a fan, you will be.
This book is a keeper! There is an index and a detailed bibliography in the back, which makes it a very valuable reference book.
