Tabloids and gossip are such a waste of time!

January 06, 2009 03:19 PM EST

This subject has really bothered me for along time and I guess today is the day I have had enough.

News is one thing, even though it is usually tainted and slanted depending on the source, but the quest for the entertainment scoop has reached yet another level.

The Princess Diana fiasco is when I starting paying attention to this and there have been many since.  This past weekend it was the Travolta family.  Not only do these poor people have to bury their son but also have everything they believe in get dragged through the mud and be picked apart.  It is absolutely none of our business and we should not be this interested.  Do we care if Amy Winehouse goes to rehab or is Lindsey Lohan is a lesbian or not?  I know that I sure do not.  I must admit I do get a chuckle out of the headlines when I am in the check out lane at the store but I have no intention of ever purchasing a tabloid in this lifetime.  The fact that this garbage scrolls by on my computer screen every time I login to check my email is bad enough.

Am I foolish to think that the world might be a better place without these poor excuses for a newspaper?

it is not the papers, but the people who hunger for that kind of stuff...

Yeah, I agree. I don't believe half the things those papers say. I will, occasionally, glance at a people, US, or Entertainment weekly that they have in the break room at work. But, they have some sort of credibility, at least.

I can't stand celebrity news. And I hate it when a celebrity makes a big deal out of backing a particular political candidate. Why would anyone base their vote on something an actor or a musician says? I hope we're all smarter than that.

No, I don't really care about any of that stuff, but the reality is that newspapers and tabloids are businesses and that stuff SELLS. If it didn't, they wouldn't print those kind of stories. That's why celebrities can command such huge salaries- the general public does want to know.

Our society feeds off such things, they sell!
Money is why there are those newspapers, and no I do not buy them.
But my father did! When he was alive he loved those things, like most of our society does.
A price these celebrities pay, that is selling there privacy, making a fortress (prison) out of there homes! Have to vacation outside the USA just for a little peace.....
What a shame. Now ask people do you really want to be a celebrity?

I was watching a couple of TV shows and thinking about how high the number of homosexuals was compared to the number I know. I got to thinking about how I didn't know anyone into domination, or any other kinky thing. There may be a lot of them in my friends and family, but since it's none of my business, I don't need to know.

I agree with Kelly, it is not so much the newspapers or tabloids as the people hungry to read that junk. Dont people realize that when someone in the spotlight loses a child, parent or spouse, they are hurting and need to be left alone with their grief. Just tell it on the evening news and forget it. Go find another story. Look for something good that happened now and then.

I think I wrote a article about this a few months ago. It gripes my nerves. There is nothing worse than turning on the world news and seeing Britney Spears!!!

I think that some people like all the tabloid news but there is a time and place for everything and seeing it everytime you turn on the tv or look at a newspaper it gets a bit irritating!

Great article!

I would say I'm here to PIF too....maybe....if I knew what it meant. Since I don't know, then I can't say it. But, I do agree with you, Teresa. I think the tabloids blow everything way out of proportion and the headlines on some of those are very laughable. As I stand there in the checkout line, I too, get quite a chuckle at some of the stuff I see. And then I gaze over at the "teen" magazines and others that are advertising in BOLD words about how to have amazing sex and how to turn him on. And I'm standing there in horror thinking about ALL the kids that have to stand in that line with their parents and see all that stuff. I agree with most everyone here that tabloids will always be around as long as there are people because a LOT of people get off on that stuff. I don't know why. I am not in the majority, obviously.

I have found a great use for tabloid papers. There's a device that rolls newspapers into logs for burning in your fireplace or for using as kindling. It works great! AND it's cheaper than buying the other starter logs which run about $6 or $8 dollars for 3 logs.

Maybe we could help rid the world of the tabloids by transforming them into logs!

Great post, Teresa.

I like the tabloids. I think sometimes they remind us that celebreties are human too. Although, a lot of "holier than thou" people might not realize that. Realizing celebrities are human is a good thing because if you do not realize they are human, they are often idolized and thought of as gods.

When I see that stuff at the supermarket I always think about the real people behind the public face and how being attacked and lied about is probably as painful to them as it would be to me.

There is an element in our society who BELIEVE all those crazy newspaper selling headlines and that's why they exist. It would be nice if someday the majority of our citizens grew up, but I'm not holding my breath. Sadly, real pain, real tragedy, and real death has occurred due to those articles, which is why they will never, ever get my money. I cheer when they lose in court because their pocketbook is their only vunerable spot. They have no heart.

I'm interested in reading about celebrities--and, also, about everyday people--if it's just something that tells about their lives. However, I don't care for writers who use these people for their own gain by making up lies and half-truths about them. They're humans just like we are. I don't like ugly rumors started about me, and I'm sure you don't like them started about you, either.

However, I will say that I think it's okay for journalists to dig when they smell a rat. For instance, if there were foul play involved in Princess Diana's death--or even a chance of it--it's the duty of the journalist not to keep quiet. Too many people kept quiet back during the Nazi regime, and, as a result, six million Jews and five million more people seen as too different or as useless feeders ended up being exterminated. It could have been stopped!

The hunger for such tragic escapades stems from the hunger of the society fed in a frenzy by media outlets who invade the lives of persons who are in actuality no different from you and I. Except in the fact that our interest in their individual talents has been transferred onto their private lives. The Ladi Diana tragedy pretty much turned me off to tabloid and sensationalist reporting. It is detrimental to us as a society and more so to the individuals who are being hounded relentlessly for the most inane tidbits about their lives.
It's quite a sad statement on our spiritual evolution, HOWEVER, there is always hope that we'll kick ourselves past the nonsense and refocus on what is truly important for us to know about the world and the persons who make it move =)

I have never bought these papers IMO they are a waste of not only good resources but time. Why waste my money on a magazine that is full of people like batboy or the 3 ton man comeon when there are people out there starving kids that are sick and dying why waste money on things like this when you can put that 3.00 to help find a cure or feed someone that is hungry.

I am offended by the growing lack of respect in this country. I have always said that FREEDOM is a relative term and like medicine should be taken or used like exercise ---with caution and moderation. The freedoms we enjoy are vast and valuable yet the most abused is the commercial freedom of speech.

Happy Birthday!

Congrats, Member of the day from---Random Acts of Comments member.

I don't buy them, but that doesn't change the fact that we have become a country of celebrity. 24 hour news coverage on Paris Hilton? Was that necessary? Especially when other important news was going on at the same time. Our attention span has become limited and we have become addicted to a culture of celebrity. Its in our faces all the time because it sells and brings ratings.

I was watching 'Law and Order' today and they pretty much talked about the same thing. It's quite terrible.

24 hour news has turned into tabloid a good part of the time. There is so much they could do.
They should sponser professional debates and think tanks over every subject available. It would draw a big crowd as the American public want to be educated. I want to know the nitty gritty on how tax cuts and raises affect business. I want to talk about the details on why businesses go over seas. I reaslize the wages paid out is less ... but I want to know more. All of us do.

I've sent emails to Fox and CNN but no response.
I would like to hear everything debated, not by politicians, but professionals; and under rules that allow each to lay out their ideas and then retut without interference.

Enough of this gossipy garbage put out as news.

Tabloids are the "Big Time Wrestling" of the news media. What I hate is when the ligit news media has to quote the tabloids. But you are right about the checkout lanes.

Whenever I have picked up a tabloid in a waiting room andlooked at it, the headlines have pretty much been misleading, and when you look inside, the story is nothing as big as the headline would lead you to believe.

I totally agree with you! Society, it seems, is to entranced by famous people. I just don't understand the fascination. They are human, just like us, that have problems, just like us.

I think it's just disgusting how the media/tabloids hound those people. Especially when they are dealing with a tragedy or personal problem. I don't waste my time nor my money on them. They're trash.

I would love the same amount of information to be available on issues and people who have contributed positive to the world.

I too was disgusted with the Travolta thing, the Anna Nicole Smith thing and so on. After the local news went off one evening one of those entertainment shows was coming on, their teaser was about the Travoltas private burial. I said outloud, "It's not private anymore with you people around." Geeez, where are the boundaries?!
