I remember - just like it was yesterday, the hikes and search for wild food that we took as a family. We would go deep into the wild to pick garbage bags full of poke to can for the winter. We went searching for wild locus bloom for frying. We would dig ramps, search for wild mushrooms and bradleys as well as sour weed for salads. We had such fun and we enjoyed the wild food that we found. We taught our kids a love for nature and the value of knowing what is edible in the wild. I honestly think these kinds of activities strengthened our relationship as a family.
These activities do not cost money. They only require your time.
I am so proud to see that our oldest daughter, Victoria is doing the same thing with her kids. I think that a healthy connection with nature can be very valuable in many aspects of our lives.
The US Forest Service offers many helps for parents who want to introduce their children to the great outdoors. They have a site called "Just for Kids." On this site you will find:
