Can you fix it or can I?
I apologize I didn't get chance to touch base with you here yesterday. Have you had any luck publishing content with photos in Firefox today?
Has Gather been putting any more thought into helping members protect their content here?
On a post I recently published, another Gather member said they liked the photo I used in it so well that they might put it on their refrigerator. I realize they aren't making any $$ off their refrigerator, but it is MY photo and they did not ask for permission, and that just illustrates how easy it is for anyone to lift a photo from Gather. And someone might be using my work to make money for themselves on other sites. It's sad that some people think photo theft is okay.
That comment caused me to delete the photo from the post. Photo theft has been a serious ongoing concern for me and the reason why I have deleted almost every photo that I have shared here in the last 2+ years, and deleted or hidden many of my photo essays. It upsets me that I have to delete to protect my content.
But deleting is not full protection anyway. My icon photo was uploaded to an essay in July. When I realized I'd mistakenly not flipped it, I deleted it from the essay before the essay was published. But there it is! All the albums on my photo page contain photos that were deleted by me, but they have popped back onto my photo listing. I did a search for my photos and found thumbnails of photos that I deleted as long ago as 2007.
Why isn't deleted content removed from your servers?
I love my friends here on Gather and I enjoy sharing photos with them. I haven't been doing nearly as much of that as I would like to for fear that someone will steal my property. This is costing me the enjoyment of sharing bits of my life with my friends, and costing Gather views.
I'm sorry I didn't have opportunity to respond to you here yesterday. Can you please send me a URL to a photo you have previously deleted that you can still see? They should not be visible once deleted. I'd be happy to look into this for you.
Have you considered adding a copyright mark to your photos? Many Gather members add one as a reminder that their content is copyrighted.
Has this changed? Or am I just remembering wrong?
Thanks
In general, members should primarily publish content that is their own original content. Straight copy/paste, even with attribution could be a copyright violation.
Fair Use involves using some portion of content that is not your own in a larger piece of your own work. Attribution is necessary - give the content originator credit for their work.
This has always been the case as far as copyright and Fair Use are concerned.
