Twin Beams of light penetrate the darkness
Illuminating the dark ribbon of road.
The wipers swish and I am warmed by the radient
heat and listen to oldies on the radio. Steadily my little Jeep
drives onward into the crystalized funnel of white.
Snow falling on the road softens the contours
of the earth. Another set of lights approach
heading in the opposite direction. after they pass
I see the tracks left behind in the snow
Swirling white flakes fill them soon, leaving the road
I am following a pristine ribbon of white caught
in the headlights as I slowly make my way homeward.
Towering snow blanketed trees line the highway on each side as I
Take the mountain curves and put the vehicle into
four wheel drive as I make the climb up the mountain
I pass a home, the coziness of lights spill out onto the
snow whitened ground. My headlights catch a doe standing
On the roads edge, I creep slowly by her as she trembles
From the icy fingers of snow or perhaps the sound of my engine.
At last the turn off road comes leading to my house.
I turn and drive along the roadway as it winds past the frozen
creek bed. The neighbors at the Y of Elliott and Walus have
a herd of deer in their yard. I pass the mailboxes shrouded
lumps under the snow. The plows have not been up yet and
may not get to us for two or three days. At last I see the curve before
my driveway. I put the gear into low 4-wheel and drive up into the carport. Home
at last I get out and see that the contour of my home and yard have changed with the
fresh snow fall. It is good be home after a long day away. Tonight I will relax with the family
Tomorrow we will play outdoors in the snow, building a snowman, sledding and playing fox and geese. Just for a moment I breath in the cool mountain air and enjoy the softly
falling snowflakes before I go inside to family, food and warmth. I say a prayer of thanksgiving for being home safe and for the beauty God gives us each season.
This one wrapped in crystals of white and blue shadows.
