What's in your trunk? I personally don't have a trunk, I have an SUV and there is a cooler, spare tire, small tool box and probably a kids toy or pair of shoes.
I have my trunk stocked for spontaniety. Here goes:
- Three complete sets of clothing - Towels and full set of toiletries - Small 2-man tent - Basic cooking utensils - Bug spray, Sun Screen, First Aid Kit - Case of bottled water - Pens, Pencils, writing and sketch paper - Cards & Yahtzee & Dice - Matches - Books - Battery Operated Fan - Two Folding Chairs - Empty Cooler - Sleeping bag & inflatable mattress - Blankets and mini pillows
I have had a couple of family emergencies where I've gotten a phone call and had to leave at that moment. Although this little trunk kit of mine was made up for last minute camping trips, it allowed me to stay with my brother & sisterinlaw for three days straight when two of their kids were killed in a car accident and they were in shock and needed someone to help keep their lives together.
The good part is sometimes on the way home from work on a Friday, I call my husband and tell him to pack up the dogs and meet me. He misses his TV, but we do have a blast.
I don't have a trunk - I have a station wagon. Wagons/Minivans are a MUST when you have little kids. The back of my car has a double stroller, and a large "emergency diaper bag", that contains all the "emergency" items you only need occasionally - extra outfit, first aid kit, extra diapers & wipes, a burping bib, a hand breastpump and storage bottle, and a snot sucker (official name is "nasal aspiration suction bulb").
I had to haul hay in my trunk when my husband's truck was broken; so I have hay scattered in my trunk. Hay is really hard to clean. My trunk will probably never be clean again :-(
I have a hatch back, so no trunk in the hatch I usually have a change of clothes for the kids (teenage girls always need to change clothes) but at the moment the back is covered in dog hair (Romeo loves to go for a ride, but a yellow Lab on black interior is NOT fun to clean)

I have a pickup truck. In the bed is 1 crushed diet coke can and some dead leaves!
