America, the Beautiful
O beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!

America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.
O beautiful, for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw;
Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!
O beautiful, for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
'Til all success be nobleness, and ev'ry gain divine!
O beautiful, for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!

"We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America."
Introducing some REAL Americans ...................

"People don't expect government to solve all their problems.
But they sense, deep in their bones, that with just a slight change in priorities,
we can make sure that every child in America has a decent shot at life
and that the doors of opportunity remain open to all . . . . If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child.

If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for their prescription and having to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandparent.

If there's an Arab-American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process,

that threatens my civil liberties.

It is that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sisters' keeper -- that makes this country work.

It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams,
yet still come together as

a single American family: "E pluribus unum," out of many, one.
Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us,
the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes.
Well, I say to them tonight,
there's not a liberal America and a conservative America;

there's the United States of America.
a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America;
there's the United States of America.

The pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states.
We coach little league in the blue states and, yes, we've got some gay friends in the red states.
There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq, and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq.
We are one people,
all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes,
all of us defending the United States of America.
In the end, that's what this election is about.
Do we participate in a politics of cynicism,
or do we participate in a politics of hope?
. . .Hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope: In the end, that is God's greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation, a belief in things not seen, a belief that there are better days ahead.

I believe that we can give our middle class relief and provide working families with a road to opportunity.
I believe we can provide jobs for the jobless, homes to the homeless, and reclaim young people in cities across America from violence and despair.
I believe that we have a righteous wind at our backs, and that as we stand on the crossroads of history, we can make the right choices and meet the challenges that face us.

America, tonight, if you feel the same energy that I do, if you feel the same urgency that I do, if you feel the same passion that I do, if you feel the same hopefulness that I do, if we do what we must do, then I have no doubt that all across the country, from Florida to Oregon, from Washington to Maine, the people will rise up in November . . ."

What a task. It is not going to be easy to start off, if you begin on a platform with division, plus
The President of the . . .United States is supposed to be President of all of America, of all the people, not President of a select few, or those with whom he shares philosophical ideals and/or beliefs.
It's just a thought.
Divided we fail...
For some reason, people don't seem to see that those who support Obama (Like I do) can be brought to their knees by the sheer beauty of what is AMERICA. The feeling behind it, what our forefathers felt when they drafted the declaration of Independence and our constitution.
**your very first photo here reminded me of the first time I saw the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. It brought tears to my eyes, it was just the most beautiful sight.
Thanks for creating this!
"United we stand; Divided we surely will fall"
Thank you again, and so glad that you like! I only wish that I could include ALL my Connections, but
HEAVENS TO MURGATROID!!!
NOT!
The few of you here shall have to represent all, sort of like Congress, right?
Also, I intentionally included those from other countries -- like Rory, Lawrence, and Alison -- because we are such a welcoming Country, aren't we?
Thanks for playing family feud. Here are the answers to the top 7 things you put on a burger.
1. beef
2. ketchup
3. onion
4. mustard
5. pickles
6. lettuce
7. grease
I think you had these (and everything else) covered!
Nice photo essay!
I see that one picture there, who is that beautiful red haired lady with the dorky brown haired dude? :-)
and
Doyle,
It was my pleasure. I'm glad you both liked it.
How do you thank me Karen?M YOU! Just being you, and that's enough, so thank you.
Doyle, I agree. There shall always be those who fight against this, but just as in the current election, the majority banding together . . .
Well, it is as Senator Obama says,
FEW OBSTACLES CAN WITHSTAND THE POWER OF MILLIONS OF VOICES CALLING FOR CHANGE!!!
Thank you both, again.
Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
I never knew the words to 'America the Beautiful' beyond the first verse and a select few lines that are oft quoted, thank you for enlightening us.
The sentiment behind the Anthem and this article is one of the reasons I felt comfortable about moving here from Canada almost twenty years ago.
The last couple of years and the anger and hate I see and hear from a few narrow minded souls has left me wondering what the future holds for those of us who immigrated here from other countries...
Perhaps if there is change for the positive and we as a Nation can leave behind the fear of those who are different then the future will be brighter than it has seemed lately
you put your heart and soul into your work... i've got goose bumps from the song and all you did and said here... God bless you sweet lady... excellent job my friend...
lots of love and hugs to you... Amen...
and God bless us every one... Amen...

That is so very special to hear, primarily because I relate to what you're saying. Let's stay better connected. Thank you
Joanna!!! WHOA! That is quite a compliment. Thank you.
necee, you're always so sweet and complimentary. I'm so blessed that you have appreciated this, and I thank you, necee.
Don,
Aaaaaaw, Don that's is so sweet. I feel that only REAL men are man enough to confident enough with themselves and their masculinity to cry. That's very touching.
I rarely publicize my own posts Don, except maybe if it is a tribute to someone else, soooo . . .I don't know what to say, except that I'm pleased that you found this one, and that I'm gratified that it touched you so much. Blessings to you!
At one time in our history it was a toss up between two tunes for "America, the Beautiful." The one that lost out was the tune of Auld Lang Syne which goes just perfectly with the words. Try singing it and see if you like it.
[snif].
The "Joe the Plumber" Icon is being used by more than one person, and would not identify YOU as Doc,... "panem et circenses"... Dr. of Curmudgeon; esq.. If you'll notice, I placed no generic Icons up there, including the generic Gather Icon.
Janet,
Thank you for that information! I didn't know that. Thank you as well for your very kind words.
By the way, I was looking for you to pop up in "My Friends" that night, as I have a prejudice for Bay Area Gatherers, but I didn't see you. But I've got ya NOW!!!
Yes - LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL ;)
America is beautiful and so are you Lady Nalita.
Thanks for posting.
OBAMA 08
Thanks for sharing, Have a lovely evening!

I am forever loving how you think and the spirit within that is uniquely you. Thank you for the sentiments.
Otelia,
Sharon K.,
Thank you for the kind words. Yes, despite the work that needs to yet be done, America is beautiful.
Lionel,
Where do I begin? Far too much to say, but for the sake of this thread, I shall let it alone here: when will people see that, "a house divided shall not stand." What that means to me is that the President is also President of "Leftists", as well as the childish.
"You can't solve a problem with the same mind-set that got you into the problem in the first place." --Albert Einstein
Bye bye Bush and Company.
Bye bye McCain and Company.
Eight years of this has been far too much;
eight is enough.
I do not want to say anymore about this on this thread.
The last 8 years have been miserable ones for most Americans, and I'm attempting to create a happy space here.
. . .in keeping with that sentiment,
I wanted to present a beautiful post, and thank you JustMe 0307 for seeing that!
