The McCain campaign has been pounding away at Obama’s supposedly lethal link to ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, even so far as John McCain alluding in the last debate that the organization “is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy.”
Sorry, that distinction goes to the GOP in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. It would be difficult to top the fraud perpetrated by the GOP in Florida, where then Secretary of State Katherine Harris rolled over for her Republican party, single handedly disenfranchised voters and handed the White House to her boss’s family, practically gift-wrapped. But, top it they did in Ohio in 2004.
Here are some of the disturbing reports and investigations that came out of Ohio following the 2004 election.
While speaking to the New York Society for Ethical Culture on December 7, 2004, Greg Palast said, “While investigating for BBC Television, we obtained three dozen of the Republican Party's confidential "caging lists," their title for the spreadsheets that list the names and addresses of Ohio voters they intended to block on any pretext. Every address of the thousands on these Republican hit lists was located in black-majority precincts. You might find that nasty and racist. It may also be a crime.
“Through deceitful manipulation of information and equipment, the citizens of Ohio were often turned away from voting booths,” he continued. (Greg Palast)
It was also discovered that the voting firm Triad sought to thwart the recount of paper ballots in Cincinnati, to foreclose finding any discrepancy between the hand count and the machine count. Alarmingly, Traid could and did access the voting machines remotely to tabulate the votes. This was done by computer over the Internet leaving the voting machines exposed to virtually everyone. (whatreallyhappened.com)
Finally, as reported in the RAW STORY Ohio's Republican Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell boasted of helping "deliver" Ohio for President Bush and said he was "truly pleased" to announce Bush had won Ohio even before all of the state's votes had been counted in his own fundraising letter. The letter, which was received by a Butler County resident Dec. 31, 2004, is a plea to support Blackwell's campaign for governor. The resident asked to remain anonymous.
The GOP wrote the playbook on voter disenfranchisement and have fine-tuned it each election cycle. Why are they crying foul regarding ACORN? Distraction. Cover-up. Cry foul on the other side first and hopefully nobody will notice your hand in the cookie jar.
Since 2000 the GOP has been relentless in its effort to disenfranchise American citizens who have the right to vote, but tend to live in Democratic districts. They have used faulty voting machines, sent false information to potential voters, turned voters away from polling sites and in some cases, used outright intimidation. They have gotten really good at vote tampering.
ACORN, in particular, has been a Republican target in 2002, 2004, 2006 and now again in 2008. Why do they keep attacking ACORN like a rabid squirrel? It’s an easy target, since their sole purpose is to register voters, and also because they probably can’t really find any hint of voter fraud by the Democrats.
Remember the 11 US attorneys fired en masse back in 2006? David Iglesias, the former US attorney for New Mexico, was among those fired after he refused to prosecute what turned out to be unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud against ACORN. (The Public Record)
In his book, In Justice: Inside the Scandal that Rocked the Bush Administration, Iglesias, as recounted by Jason Leopold of The Public Record, said “the Department of Justice aggressively pushed him and other US attorneys to prosecute voter fraud cases, an issue the former US attorney says the DOJ became unusually obsessed with.”
"The e-mail imperatives came again in 2004 and 2006, by which time I had learned that far from being standard operating procedure for the Justice Department, the emphasis on voter irregularities was unique to the Bush administration," Iglesias wrote.
Iglesias says that Republican officials in his state were far less interested in election reforms and more intent on suppressing votes.
"But there was a more sinister reading to such urgent calls for reform, not to mention the Justice Department's strident insistence on harvesting a bumper crop of voter fraud prosecutions.”
"Not only did the [Bush] administration stoop to such seamy expedients to press its agenda in 2004," Iglesias wrote. "It had the full might and authority of the federal government and its prosecutorial powers to accomplish its ends."
Republicans repeatedly wave the “fraud” flag as a fear and diversionary tactic, but how widespread is real voter fraud? Studies have repeatedly shown that voter fraud is extremely rare. According to a recent analysis by Lorraine Minnite, an expert on voting crime at Barnard College, federal courts found only 24 voters guilty of fraud from 2002 to 2005, out of hundreds of millions of votes caste. “The claim of widespread voter fraud,” Minnite says, “is itself a fraud.” (Rolling Stone)
David Iglesias continued in that same vein when he said, “They (Bush Administration) wanted some splashy pre-election indictments that would scare these alleged hordes of illegal voters away. We took over 100 complaints and investigated for almost two years – but I didn’t fine one prosecutable case of voter fraud in the entire state of New Mexico.
The above statements came from an article called Block the Vote written by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Greg Palat published in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine. It is an eye-opening and frightening missive. Rolling Stone thought the information so important they have allowed it to be read in its entirety online. You can find it at rollingstone.com.
According to Kennedy and Palast, suppressing the vote has long been a cornerstone of the GOP’s electoral strategy.
One startling, but unfortunately common example, took place on Super Tuesday in New Mexico. Last February 5th, one in nine Democrats who tried to cast ballots in New Mexico found their names missing from the registration lists. The numbers were even higher in precincts like Las Vegas, where nearly 20 percent of the county's voters were absent from the rolls. With their status in limbo, the voters were forced to cast "provisional" ballots, which can be reviewed and discarded by election officials without explanation. On Super Tuesday, more than half of all provisional ballots cast were thrown out statewide.
In state after state, Republican operatives — the party's elite commandos of bare-knuckle politics — are wielding new federal legislation to systematically disenfranchise Democrats.
Since 2003, according to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, at least 2.7 million new voters have had their applications to register rejected. In addition, at least 1.6 million votes were never counted in the 2004 election — and the commission's own data suggests that the real number could be twice as high. To purge registration rolls and discard ballots, partisan election officials used a wide range of pretexts, from "unreadability" to changes in a voter's signature.
In case after case, Republican election officials at the local and state level have used the rules to give GOP candidates an edge on Election Day by creating new barriers to registration, purging legitimate names from voter rolls, challenging voters at the polls and discarding valid ballots.
Kennedy and Palast list these as the recently enacted barriers thrown up to deter voters:
• Obstructing Voter-Registration Drives. Since 2004, the Bush administration and more than a dozen states have taken steps to impede voter registration. Among the worst offenders is Florida, where the Republican-dominated legislature created hefty fines — up to $5,000 per violation — for groups that fail to meet deadlines for turning in voter-application forms.
• Demanding “Perfect Matches”. Under this rigid framework, new registrants can lose the right to vote if the information on their voter-registration forms — Social Security number, street address and precisely spelled name, right down to a hyphen — fails to exactly match data listed in other government records. In a recent study it was found most errors were typing mistakes made by government clerks when they transcribe data. Those typos cost a citizen the right to vote.
• Purging Legitimate Voters From the Rolls HAVA (Help America Vote Act) requires that records be centralized, computerized and maintained by secretaries of state — partisan officials — who are empowered to purge the rolls of any voter they deem ineligible. All told, states reported scrubbing at least 10 million voters from their rolls on questionable grounds between 2004 and 2006.
• Requiring Unnecessary Voter ID’s Even if voters run the gauntlet of the new registration laws, they can still be blocked at the polling station.
• Rejecting “Spoiled” Ballots The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, in its investigation of the 2000 returns from Florida, found that African-Americans were nearly 10 times more likely than whites to have their ballots rejected, a ratio that holds nationwide. In 2004, the number of spoiled ballots in New Mexico — 19,000 — was three times George Bush's margin of victory.
• Challenging “Provisional” Ballots In 2004, an estimated 3 million voters who showed up at the polls were refused regular ballots because their registration was challenged on a technicality. Instead, these voters were handed "provisional" ballots, a fail-safe measure mandated by HAVA to enable officials to review disputed votes. But for many officials, resolving disputes means tossing ballots in the trash. In 2004, a third of all provisional ballots — as many as 1 million votes — were simply thrown away at the discretion of election officials.
The GOP has already been actively using these tactics in several states. The New York Times reported that “About 6,000 new voters in Colorado may not be allowed to cast regular ballots on Election Day because they failed to check a box on a voter registration form.”
Voter registration groups say that officials with Secretary of State Mike Coffman’s office specifically told them the box did NOT need to be checked.
Adding to the confusion, Mr. Coffman has had to correct an earlier letter from his office that named a wrong date by which new voters needed to correct incomplete forms.
Coffman is a Republican.
The Ohio Republican Party sued Jennifer Brunner, Ohio’s Secretary of State – a Democrat - to turn over lists of voters whose names did not match those on government databases to local election officials. Once they have the names, they may require these voters to cast provisional ballots rather than regular ballots. As documented by Kennedy and Palast, most provisional ballots are tossed.
A lower court ruled in favor of the GOP, but Brunner took it to the Supreme Court who ruled in her favor. The Republicans immediately filed another lawsuit using an individual’s name.
And in California, Mark Jacoby, owner of a firm hired by the state GOP to register voters was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of voter registration fraud. The Los Angeles Times reported that dozens of voters complained they were duped by the firm into switching their party registration to Republican while being told they were signing a petition for tougher penalties on child molesters.
The switches could impede Democratic get-out-the-vote efforts and could prevent those affected from voting in next year's Democratic primaries. Some of the voters were even switched to absentee status, meaning they could lose their vote entirely if they show up at the polls on Election Day without bringing an absentee ballot.
So while McCain is yelling “Fraud” and “ACORN” as a distraction, Republicans are engaging in strong-arm tactics to put up barriers and disenfranchise as many voters as possible. Confusion is their friend.
As Hector Balderas, state auditor of New Mexico said in Block the Vote, “As a strategic consideration there are those that benefit from chaos at the ballot box.”
Can the GOP pull off the greatest voter “fraud” in U.S history? We’ll know two weeks from today.

Ever since Blacks obtained the right TO vote, there are those in this country who have been doing everything they possibly could do to prevent us from voting.
Submitted for your approval: just look above at all of the data that Cheri Cabot has compiled.
ACORN wants those who tried to fraud THEM investigated, but the story has been twisted by the same people who DO NOT want Blacks to vote.
. . .and the games continue.
I've a message for you criminals: you shan't stop the Democrat from gaining the office -- not this time.
Good night.
:=)
I read yesterday where the Democratic Precinct chairman in one state found he had been "Purged" from the list.
The Diane Rehm show on Monday started with a very interesting interview/discussion of the allegations against ACORN as well as looking at how close the ties are between Obama and ACORN.
One thing, though lately their main focus has been on Voter Registration, ACORN is actually quite involved in other issues, a visit to their website shows a list of the campaigns they are working on.
Campaigns
* Foreclosures
* Gulf Coast Recovery
* Immigration
* Living Wage
* Paid Sick Days
* Voter Engagement
Hardly seems likely that they would risk jeopardising their other projects, does it?
and for those who are too lazy to look this up themselves the Linkety- link to ACORN
Also there was another organisation involved in the discussion that I'd never heard of... the ACRU no that's not a typo there is an organization, very right leaning from what I've seen and read, that calls itself the 'American Civil Rights Union' in direct opposition to the more commonly known ACLU...
WE are the American people. Whomever we ~ as individual voters ~ choose to receive our vote deserves to have it fair and square. If this election comes up smelling like something other than a rose, you can bet I'll be one of the voters to raise some hell.
We've all had enough of the lieing, cheating and stealing. AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE!
It's always interesting to me how Republicans will cry innocent when accused of manipulating the vote, but at the end of every lawsuit, there is a Republican. They file these stupid suits and waste so much taxpayer money!
It just makes me angry that people sit back and let it happen!
Acorn is required by law to submit each person's paperwork when they register them. All it takes is one fruit loop, vile, pathetic, GOP freak to register himself as Mickey Mouse and "viola!", he can spin around, point his grubby, accusatory finger and say "LOOK! He tried to register Mickey Mouse!"
It's NOT voter fraud...unless Mickey Mouse shows up to vote. Acorn already flags all suspicious registrations for review but they MUST submit them all.
Even worse...this is true of ALL voter registration drives.

"..win at any cost, win through any method, playing by the rules is for losers; because winning is all that matters.."
Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell appeared on an MSNBC show a month or so ago, where he stated that using a public office to further partisan ambitions was absolutely right, legal and justified.
Nothing could be more unethical in my opinion. Public offices are funded by ALL taxpayers, because those offices are supposed to be used to benefit ALL the citizens.
As an Independent, my biggest complaint with the GOP has always been their attitude, persistence and insistence that only they are the truth, the way and the light of "real" Americanism. This is proved patently wrong in their dismissiveness of all other Americans.
We are a land of infinite diversity, united under the common good of all.
America is for Americans, not just Republicans.
Uh . . .
Hmmm . . .
Let me see. I'm ROFL.
Picture this: 97%, No, change that. Reverse the statistics, and have the statistics reflect that Hispanics and Blacks were voting for Republicans in the numbers that they have have traditionally voted for Democrats since . . .hmmm, 1968 . . .then tell me that the voter fraud that is occurring as we speak, and that has been occurring would be occurring? Let's keep it real, here. I speaking of voter, not election fraud.
___________________________________________
As far as election fraud, I need to get the demographics (by race) of Atlanta, GA. After that, I am going to ask the same question that I have been repeatedly asking, which is:
How in the Hell did George W. Bush win Atlanta in 2004? How?
I've a friend who doesn't have the sense of a peanut, or he is political. I love him dearly, but I am just being honest. When I mentioned this to him, even he started scratching his head over THAT one; in fact, he was tending toward NOT believing it.
Our vote is what makes us a democracy. GOP does not spell GOD and it's time to take back our country!
if I did not like the way something was going, I was assured that I had the right and responsibility to use my vote to help change the situation ... to help make things better for myself and other citizens ........
I guess I was not taught that the "other guy" might not play fair ..... the rules are in place for every person .... as are the rights and responsibilities .....
it is disheartening to see how bad things have gotten ...... how people can have their vote taken away from them [illegally] just because some people beleive that they have more rights than others .......
I have nieces and nephews that believe their votes don't or won't matter ..... who would rather stay away from the polls because of these feelings of hopelessness and helplessness that the candidates foster through mud-slinging and false accusations ........
these are good kids .... upstanding young people who were raised to believe in democracy and the idea that every vote was important ..... who have seen the underbelly of political slime oozing over thier ideals and beliefs since the 2000 election ....... and have come to the conclusion that everything they were taught is nothing but garbage .... because what they see in real life is not what it should be .....
keep posting information that will help people to SEE and .... hopefully ... enable them to ACT against such injustices ..... now and in the future ......... I would like to be able to be proud of my country and representatives again .... and for my nieces and nephews to be able to see that they were not just being fed a bunch of BS growing up ....
I believe I've already read it, if it's the RFK one (I've been reading so many lately, I'm getting them all mixed), but I'll go back again and see if it is the same one.
Thanks.
"It is tooooo late!!!"
The very second I did that I realized I should have gone ahead, and registered him for the next time -- a missed opportunity.
I blew that one, but I learned. Frustration, from running around -- asking, asking, asking, asking, "Are you registered to vote?" and then here comes "Mr. Playa" THE DAY AFTER.
It shall not happen again, though.
Don't be turned away on election day and demand a paper trail!
The Republican effort to prevent people from voting has been around since the 2000 election at least. States have changed their election codes to prevent some of the tactics Republicans have used.
I also recall a Black Detroit small business owner/family man who was bombed/murdered simply because HE promoted/encouraged people to register to vote. Liberals were not responsible for that, either.
It's a group that focusses on the Constitution, and THE PEOPLE (ALL of the PEOPLE of the United States of America), as well as our rights, politics, etc.
I'm thinking of at least 3 Amendments off the top of my head that have been violated with all of these FRAUDULENT activities already,
and let me be clear that
I am not speaking of ACORN being guilty of it.
At the very worse, ACORN is guilty of whistleblowing, if an employer is able to whistleblow on the employee.
No, I am referring to those who have attempted to hijack America,
supercede and violate the Constitution,
and
obviously hold everything that America was founded upon in complete contempt.
Cheri, I second your recommendation of the Rolling Stone article.
It is like calling the "Fair Tax Act" fair when if you read it you find it will not cover the cost of even running the government much less anything else. But it will get rid of Social Security and Medicare which the Republicans have been after for many years. Guess since it first was established in 1935. Again the ones who would be hit the worse would be those who can stand it least.
They use words such as climate change rather than global warming or economic bad times rather than call it what it has become a recession. I don't care what you call it it is wrong. These are the ones who if you could tie them down would be in jail for criminal charges but their friends keep them out so they can cheat us of a president who would run this country like it should be run.
I'm old and what little I have isn't much. Doubt that many will even notice when I die, heck if I did die right now it would be a week or more before anyone might even notice. But I do not want my grand kids growing up in a country where those who lie, cheat, and steal are running the country. They do not care about the laws. They thumb their noses at it. Just look at who is investigated for voter fraud by the Justice Department. It is ACORN not the ones who are really doing the voter fraud. Time and again when asked to investigate the Justice Department has not done any investigations into any organizations which are run by Republican organizations or back by them.
Same for so many other violations that have gone on for the last eight years.
:O\
DANG!
Obama will still win
the winds of change are too strong!
In the meantime, we need to come up with a system that makes fraud impossible.
Neeetah, your Ladyship! I would have probably responded to Mr. Playa the same way...or I would have sent him to the library and let the fed up circulation clerks have at him. Amazing how it can be all over the news and these people miss it.
In 2004, at a Copenhagen County meeting with administrators, where there were many Danish constitutional lawyers, I was asked what the heck happened to American democracy, since northern Europe has been so maligned and stereotypically typecast within GOP campaign ads aimed at Democrats, for being more socially conscious with the fear-evoking misnomer: socialist.
Thought I'd help clear the air and put the damn GOP (Gutted Old Party) distraction to bed.
The truth about Obama's birth certificate.
Summary
In June [2008], the Obama campaign released a digitally scanned image of his birth certificate to quell speculative charges that he might not be a natural-born citizen. But the image prompted more blog-based skepticism about the document's authenticity. And recently, author Jerome Corsi, whose book attacks Obama, said in a TV interview that the birth certificate the campaign has is "fake."
We beg to differ. FactCheck.org staffers have now seen, touched, examined and photographed the original birth certificate. We conclude that it meets all of the requirements from the State Department for proving U.S. citizenship. Claims that the document lacks a raised seal or a signature are false. We have posted high-resolution photographs of the document as "supporting documents" to this article. Our conclusion: Obama was born in the U.S.A. just as he has always said.
If undecided due to this distraction, kindly go to this link where you can read the complete analysis with photos: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html

"Did I tell you about a certain person I spoke to today who said he is voting for Obama, and I know he isn't even registered to vote? How do I know it, because his ballot came to my house, and since he doesn't live here anymore, I'm not giving it to him. Happy Halloween." Ping from Claudia K. to Mari M.
What a stupid thing to do -- to commit a Federal offense, and then brag about it openly. Wow. That's deep.
It isn't a race thing or a gender thing or anything but that women, blacks, hispanics and gays turn out to be Democrats, so they are disenfranchised from voting in their districts by the Repubs that oversee the polls! Disgusting! Good article Cheri, glad you knee is better.
tampering with the U.S. mail - Prima Donna
A neighbor kid was getting into our mail box and I called the post office . He said to call the police . Someone would have to know who to get a hold of first .
He said that their work was incredibly important, and he seemed a little choked up over (not choking on) his words.
And now ACORN is evil??? ...... Whodathunkit
Be sure to hold onto your stub.

Great article! In just a few days this whole mess will be over and life can return to normal. The charges by the GOP that Obama is somehow complacent in the fraudulent registering of voters is a ridiculous charge. The time and effort required for the few additional votes that would preclude this being a realistic pursuit by the Obama people!
The GOP is engaged in the politics of desperation. Whether or not it works remains to be seen. I'm surprised they haven't claimed a link to Charles Manson for Obama! I've seen claims that he is linked to Osama.
I understand the reasoning behind your frustration. The two party system is only as good as we make it. And for some time we, the electorate, have been negligent in our duties in this nation. If all of us make the effort to learn as much about candidates as possible and strive to get the people in office who most closely believe in the same things we do. This requires a fair amount of effort but no one ever said that democracy would be easy!
However, if you can come up with an alternative system I'd be more than willing to listen to your idea!
Pathetic...
They want to make the rules and then break them.
it makes no sense what so ever...
On the numbers, the Republicans rant about "making sure that the voting process is 'proper'" so they work to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands if not millions in some places (like Colorado).
They make NO sense. It is disingenuous to the core...
Everything they have been saying is opposite of reality...
They are PATHETIC... Going on about this Nation... and their so called pride in it and "Service" to it... But not if what it stands for Decides not to choose THEM!!! THEN they do anything to subvert what this Nation Stands for... They "Serve" only to put themselves in Power...
Everything they have been saying has been the opposite of reality (just like the last eight years) ... Democracy that is not Democracy...
... Democracy that is not Democracy...
Democracy that is not Democracy...
...Democracy that is not Democracy...
It is a mental game that they play:
Humans have to have a way to make determinations of acceptance or rejection, of goodness or badness,
That determination is made on our perception of events...
"Ok, we'll do this, but if it turns out his way it was a good idea, if it turns out that way it was a bad idea" (yes that is simplified, but it is a real point)
They have decided that if they CONTROL the interpretation of the Perception, then they are never wrong...
Everyone does it to a degree...
But they have been doing it to an unreal degree where everything is now surreal...
If they NEVER accept reality (like Palin's refusal to accept that she was found to have broken Alaskan Statues on ethics by the legislative investigative panel) then they create their own reality bubble... They are trying to extend that bubble around not just themselves, but the Nation... it's a dangerous bubble...
McCain has nothing to lose anymore (he's already sold his soul to get the Prize he has set for HIMSELF)...
He has experienced, as a Prisoner of War, that just being stubborn and surviving got him through... That is fine in a POW situation... That is very dangerous in this election... in this world as a World Leader... He thinks that JUST WANTING TO SEE THINGS THE WAY HE WANTS THEM TO BE MAKES THEM SO...
We have had Eight Disastrous years of that kind of thinking...
He is Out of Touch...
Way Out...
Way way out of touch...
The scary part is the number of people that are willing to see what he wants to see for his reasons or other personal reasons... Racist Reasons... ideological reasons... identity reasons... greedy reasons... power reasons...
The Blocking of Democracy be the Republicans is very real and very dangerous...
Good piece Cheri...
Peace,
DJE
The GOP has been riding this gravy train for too long to give up without a fight.
There are however several things in play right now that may avert such a disaster. One, the DNC knows the GOP playbook pretty well by now. They know the dirty tricks they use and have put steps in place to avert them. And example is in Nev. I went to a Democratic rally here in Southern Cal about 3 weeks ago, and an attorney who is on the state committee to elect Obama. Her office was drafting a letter to recruit lawyers to stand in Nev polling places and be a legal presence. Even BEFORE the letter was sent out they had 1,300 lawyers volunteer! Who knows how many they have now that the recruiting letter has been sent!
Secondly, hopefully the numbers for Obama will be so huge that even GOP dirty tricks can't stop the tidal wave.
And finally, I truly believe if the GOP steals this election there will be a backlash like nothing ever seen before. A rebellion. Americans are not as dumb this time around. We have learned how they can buy and steal an election and we also know the numbers overwhelmingly favor Obama.
Only ten days. A day in our lives like no other.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14935.html
If Obama loses this election and the public accepts the results, democracy is dead and buried in the USA. The fascist dictatorship will have cemented its hold on power.
God help you all.
The Obama people will never allow the fact to get out that he is a shoe-in for fear that the needed voters will stay home being over confident of his electability causing the count to be even closer ... they are between a rock and a hard place ... the advantage, as usual, going to the cheaters ... another 4 years of neoCON adventure ??
These allegations just don't make sense.
I have often thought the last few weeks that the more the liberal media hype up these polls and say Obama will win, the more the lazy Obama followers will just stay home LOL! So I guess we'll see who wins and no matter who wins the other side will keep crying fraud.
What makes me sick is that when real fraud is found, the story just dies? What happens to those that are truly defrauding the people? These candidates can't control everyone in their party. We should pursue the facts, find the frauds and punish them harshly.
On that note... A candidate for a local race around here was arrested for stealing his opponents signs :)
