A Question for Publishing Poets and Writers...

As a poet or writer, do you post all of your writerly endeavors on Gather to share with your friends, or do you hold back the things you intend to publish elsewhere to abide by rules that do no accept previously published material?  Do you consider Gather a workshop experience, and take work down before you submit for publication?

I'm interested in hearing what others do, as I have been known to both withhold things I am intending to send out for publication, and withdraw them.

~JennyBean~ H. GOOD QUESTION! .. personally I'm holding back some material I hope to one day get syndicated although I do tend to put a lot of material on Gather .. both writings and drawings. I think it's best you don't tip off others with what may one day be earning your bread and butter until you land a contract.

I removed all my work and do not publish my poetry here any longer. I keep it for future publication. I enjoy reading the work of others on here and leave it at that.
I did put a few chapters of a short novel i was writing here on Gather, but decided it was best to take it down. I have kept some material of gather altogether after reading a few articles on plagarism.

Generally, I only post things on Gather that I have no intention of publishing elsewhere. But you know how it is with writing . . . sometimes you sort of plaigerize yourself, and an old posting could become the source of a new piece of writing later.

Great feedback everyone. I agree with a lot of the points made, especially when it comes to plagiarism. I have an online writer's group that's small and cozy with password protection so it's not available to the general public and won't show up in google searches. That is where I post the majority of my work in progress for feedback. I do like to post poetry here sometimes though, and random freewrites.

I'll probably remove my stuff after I get my book finished, but I don't really care. Almost everything has a registered Copyright and I really don't care about fame or fortune. I'll be happy to sell my book at cost. I write to have fun and not to impress. Almost everyone likes the songs and poems I write and tell me I should get published, but I like my life as is and I don't want any possiblity of fame to change it.

I only publish things here that were offered elsewhere non-exclusively or that I don't plan to publish elsewhere. A lot of my stuff is on AC non-exclusively as well as here., but by no means all of it.
