That seems to be the 'new thing' within the last decade (?) or so ... insuring your loving companions at the tune of $30-$60.00 per month and I am sure you can spend more!
No, I just can't afford to insure three dogs and two cats. My girls are indoor and have a fenced in yard. But I do worry about my border collie who is now ten years old and has arthritis in her back and hip. I worry about her when she become terribly elderly.
I don't have pets at the moment, but when I did, I did not insure them. Luckily at that time, I had a considerable amount of disposable income, which meant that if anything went wrong, I could usually cover it with no worries.
For people who don't have a lot of extra money set aside in case of emergency, though, pet insurance seems like a great thing. One of my friends looked into it when she got a cat, and I believe she bought a policy, because it would cover having the cat spayed, as well as any emergency incidents that came up. Since her cat was a stray, who might have had any number of problems, it seemed like a good idea for her to do so.
no we dont we have two large dog,, in a small town it is not expensive to take care of, in fact the puppy will be fix next week and that is only $ 75 that is includes rabbies shots,, and they take payments,, and to lience our dog here is only $5 bucks...per years
No, I don't have any insurance on my 3 year old "mutt'. She's our baby and I don't know what I would do if anything ahppened to her. My husband and I were wondering aloud about this topic the other day. I guess I dont' have enough info on it and not sure if we need another monthly bill!
No, I don't insure my pets. The reason being is that those pet plans are very similar to a lot of human policies in that they have a maximum amount of payout coverage per year, have the prexisting condition clauses and are basically just a medical spending account for a pet.
I don't have actual insurance, but I have a Wellness Plan. I love it! I pay a small amount monthly and then when its time for check ups and shots, they're all covered so I don't have to worry about shelling out a lot at one time. It also covered the anestesia when Gizmo had to have surger a couple of months ago and gave me 10% off on some of the services.
My daughter carries a wellness plan on her dog and it saves a lot of money. Her dog (the one remaining) is healthy though he gave us a bad scare a month or so ago.
The communities struggle so much with unwanted animals.Thier numbers are going up So are senior citizens.Somebody out there is trying to make a buck.Dog food is exclusive,theres all kinds of clothes and whole catalogs just for pets.Insurances are like pharmasutical companies.Tween a rock and a hard place.I like the wellness plan.There is a need for that because prices are so high at the vet;just like the doctor.
We don't because it would be too expensive considering the number of furballs we have (4 right now) but we did look into it and I can see that it could be a useful thing to have.
Actually, there is enough issues with getting claims sent through with the humans in the household without 'pet insurance' rejecting claims (or completely messing them up) like the ones for human insurance...
I'm definitely looking into it, although it does feel like something I cannot afford right now. Yet, my kitty is getting older, and I'd end up paying a LOT more if something happened to her. :(
SUCH a good question! After spending over $7000+ that we didn't have on saving one of our cats & *trying* to save our wonderful older dog who didn't make it, just over the past few months, we've been wondering about it ourselves.
This subject makes me mad though, because in 95 or 96 I had the great idea to start a company to insur pets & everyone shot down the idea!
This is a great topic. At least in NYC, a trip for our kitty Dr. Snuggle can cost $400-$1000 if anything is -remotely- wrong. That's what our bill looked like simply for indigestion and all of the 'tests' required. So, from where I sit, 50-60 per month would be a dream. After all, we pay $460 per month for human health insurance and that's without Dental.

Never did carry insurance for my pets, hard enough with health insurance costs! It would have came in handy though when my dog got ran over and her broken leg required surgery. The surgery was 1500.00, a few weeks later it rebroke because the break was up near her hip and the vet used wire to fix it. Anyway we did the surgery again for another 1500.00 and Buffy, my Yorkie died a few weeks later after all that. :( So although I love dogs, and have had them all my life. I'm not sure if I will get another.
I did and everything I sent in was denied as being pre existing even though I had the doctor write them explaining it wasn't. That was on top of dealing with the dog's death. They gave me a humongous run around so I cancelled VPI was the name of the company
When I first got my cats, I did pay for the insurance. Had it for a year. But then I lost my job and I canceled it. I regret never getting it again. Both my cats have been in/out of the vet's office for different ailments, and medications. Right now Trouble is on a medication for the rest of his life (1 to 3 yrs more of it anyway) and Misha too. I was just thinking the other day I wish I had held onto the insurance, it sure would of helped with the cost of things.

I know there is 'pet insurance' for pet birds, too.
That was an option on one of the plans.
