NEWSWEEK DECLARES THOMPSON WILL BE OUR NEXT COMMANDER IN CHIEF!

September 05, 2007 08:44 PM EDT (Updated: September 06, 2007 04:38 AM EDT)

© 2007 James A. Harris

My Newsweek magazine arrived today (dated September 10, 2007) with former senator Fred Thompson on the cover. I read the article about his soon-to-be-official candidacy and was amazed to find this sentence at the end of the piece: "Thompson, who has already been president three times in the movies, is about to find out how much harder it is to play commander in chief when you don't have a script."

I could not believe my eyes! I re-read it three more times to be certain I had not misread it or simply skipped a word or two. I hadn't. I think they likely meant to say, "...may soon find out..." or "...play someone running for the office ," but that is not what they printed.

What's with Newsweek? Did they give all their proof-readers and editors Labor Day off? Or are they intentionally, thought subtly, telling us that their choice out of the wide field of wanna-bes is Mr. Thompson.

No matter what the real reason, this is terrible journalism; and an unfortunate close to an otherwise informative and interesting article.

You're right; that's really bad journalism. What a bunch of idiots. But no more so than someone who would actually vote for an actor who happens to play at being a member of Congress.

Fred is too extreme on a lot of issues to get in. It's just a fact. I am so disheartened at all the choices. It's as though there's no one really good willing to step up anymore. Guess I can't really wonder why, though, with the current state of affairs.

Andrea one thought... If we had not had Reagen, we would have had Jimmy for another 4 years and our economy would have continued to falter as would our respect in the world... the end result would have been a likely WW111 with nukes becouse of the preconceived weakness of the country when the ussr internally was looking for something to buey up their leaders...

Reagan helped bring down the wall and defeat communism as a prime threat to freedom in the world. These are facts, you may not agree with things he believed in but he was 100% American at the heart and tried to always do his best for the country and for the people of the world...

I am grateful to him and am proud to say I voted for him in the first election I could vote.

Hyperbole, it is the spice of the journalists livelihood. By the way Thompsons announement may be official already, the BBC has publishe it, at one minute past midnight, London Time. It was supposed to be published at one minute past midnight, but it was supposed to be EDT. I wonder who made the mistake, the BBC, or Fred Thompson's Campaign Staff?

Actually, Emmett, and respectfully, those are not the facts. Russia was crumbling from the inside out, and it's only PR that makes people think Reagan had anything to do with it. (Bullshit Republican PR, to be exact.) Couple that with a restive populace seeking change, mix that with a visionary like Gorbachev, and you see Reagan had nothing to do with it. But on the other hand, check out one of his worst legacies that has troubling consequences today: firing all the air traffic controllers. Plus, cuts in social programs, and a ton of other things that I don't need to enumerate. Oooh, and how about the Falklands?! Jeez, I could go on forever.

One of several scenarios. If the nominee is Mitt, then people will vote for ABR - anybody but a Republican. A lot of Republicans don't want that so they migh push Thompson to the front.

It was only American paranoia and self-centered centrism that thought the Ruskies were a real nuclear threat. They did not have bonk.

Carter's economic woes were the result of his Fed Chief.

Greenspan was the real president these last several years until his retirement.

Quite so, Kathryn! The Russians were never that kind of threat, but the Cold Warriors in Washington needed to keep their jobs, so they kept perpetuating the myth. And sadly, with Greenspan in the pocket of a Republican president, we got a biased Fed chief who touted the tax cuts. Anybody out there benefit from that?

A testament to the sad state of education in this country. The media seems to think that the faster they put something out there, and the more controversial it is, the readers (a.k.a. Homer Simpson Americans) won't even notice how poorly it's written or how ill conceived it is.

I don't think Thompson has a real shot, but he will definitely steal votes from the other Republicans and further water down their chances of the Republican Party of ever holding the office for the next couple of terms.

Thompson is just a no integrity clown that plays a good person on TV. People looking to him for leadership are like those that ask medical advice from an actor that plays a doctor on TV. It's laughable. He was a lobbyist, and while a member of the Watergate commission in congress, he was reporting back to Nixon as his spy the whole time. Now that's your Mr. Integrity for you. Spying for a crook. One of the tapes has a conversation where Nixon expresses his concern that they had chosen Thompson as their spy, because he thought him not too bright.

Thompson is just about the only solid Conservative on almost all the issues. Other than Romney, all the other guys are posers.

Conservatives will always be at, or near the top in all the Presidential elections. If we ever have another Jimmy Carter, this country will slide into the abyss - just like it did when he was President. Too bad there are no Conservative Democrats running in '08 - the U.S. could use another Scoop Jackson or Sam Nunn.........but this time, in the White House.

You might have a point there Marilyn! It seems as if everyone is after the Republician candidates because of past mistakes, which parts of their personal life should not be a factor as to whether or not they are suitable for the job, but what does matter to me is whether they have what it takes to do the job.

Gezs, guess the history books got it all wrong about Reagan then if he didn't cause the fall of Communism and guess people like Jimmy Carter should be praised for making the appeasement with North Korea to stop thier nuclear weapons development then.

I've always liked Fred Thompson, but I really don't think he has cut his chops enough to be President of the United States. Reagan, who was a damn good President, was the President of the Screen Actors Guild , Governor of California and politically active for decades before he was elected in back to back landslide victories.
I like Rudy, I saw how he turned around NYC and I think he is the right man at the right time for us.
He took a city that was in a tailspin, not unlike Reagan taking the helm of the US , and turned it all around.
The United States still reaps the rewards of Reagan's stamp and so too does NYC as a result of Rudy taking the, what was deemed unmanageable, city into the prosperous, thriving safe city it is to day.
The Unites States needs to get serious about our border security, it needs to find its resolve in fighting this war on terror, it needs to keep a vibrant economy stay vibrant.....Rudy can do that for us.

Ron B.: I saw a donkey fall into the Grand Canyon once, does that count as momentarily flying.

Andrea: Your wish is for smarter voters. Where are they coming from? Look at these comments for instance, are all these words spelled wrong intentionally?

Andrea: As for Reagan, I voted against Carter and then Reagan converted me to a Republican. He was the real deal with a 100% American heart. Unlike your family evidently. I do admit though that Bush is trying his best to push me back to being a democrat. Hell, guess I'll just have to vote for who answers the tough questions the best. A novel idea, I know.

Keith, et al; Personally, I think it is a two-person race already: Rudy vs Hillary.

Jimmy; back to your article. Such 'reporting' on the level of NEWSWEEK is disgraceful. When you get the next issue, let us know if they make a comment of some sort on their fallacy.

Keith - you need to check out the full history on Rudy. When he came into office many of the programs that eventually led to the cleaning up of NYC were already in the beginning stages (for instance, cleaning up the subway cars, getting the window-washers off the streets, etc.). He was not responsible for them. But, you can bet that when they started yielding results, he was front-and-center taking credit for them. He's a good speaker, I'll give him that. Check your timelines - I think you'll be very surprised.

Reminds me of Mitt Romney in Boston. He came in on the tail end of the Big Dig and when it was near completion, he rode down to the site in a limo, donned a construction hat, and led the press crew around pointing at pieces of construction equipment like he knew what the hell he was talking about. What a poser! If he really wanted the credit for building the piece of crap, then he should go back and talk responsibility for the lawsuits that are going on due to all the poor constrution and death.

These guys are pure and simple politicians. Don't dupe yourselves into thinking that they're brain surgeons or anything. They know how to step in and take credit for other people's efforts with a million dollar smile on their faces.

You got a lot of responses! I'll stand up and be counted - I like Fred Thompson. If he's half as sincere as he seems to be, he's got it all over the pretty boy (or girl) politicians that talk out of both sides of their faces at once. He makes a lot of sense on issues that people are afraid to deal with.

Sheryl
I know that a lot of proposals were in place. I live in the area, I work for the MTA, I have spent a lot of time in NYC since the days when Mayor Koch was in office. It wasn't until Rudy was elected when things started happening that had a dramatic impact. Koch nor Dinkins cut taxes, Koch nor Dinking reduced spending, Koch nor Dinkins left office with a surplus, Koch nor Dinkins made the police enforce the quality of life laws, Koch nor Dinkins addressed the subway situation like Rudy, Koch nor Dinkins saw crime drop like it did under Rudy.....Let's also not forget how Rudy went after the mob and tossed them out of the Fulton St. fish market, Rudy toppled the status quo that led to the tailspin the city found itself in. Bloomberg ran the first time on the campaign promise to be just like Rudy. Apparently Rudy must have done something right, I don't recall hearing Dinkins running on the platform, I'm going to be like Koch.
Spin it how you like, I know for a fact the city was in such bad shape that it was called unmanageable and Rudy stunned everybody with his success above beyond anything anybody dreamed could be achieved. In the late '80's I hated going into the city, it was a cesspool, today I can't wait to go to do something, no matter what time of day or night, no matter what borough, I've been to them all.
Bottom line, Fred Thompson seems like a good guy, but I think Rudy is more qualified I think Rudy has a resume to run on that puts him head and shoulders above any other candidate Republican or Democrat.

Keith - I'm not saying he didn't do anything right, but I am saying that he takes credit for many things that were in place and ready to go when he took office. That's not honest, in my book. I've heard him speak at a conference in NYC - he really does love to pat himself on the back. You don't hear him give much credit to the police or other government workers - it took a lot of people pulling together to make NYC come back to its present state.

Well Sheryl what do you think a politician is going to do? Fact is he made it happen, where others talked the talk but fell flat on their faces.
I'll give you an example of leadership or lack thereof. I grew up in Bridgeport ,CT. That former great industrial city has been rebuilding itself since before I was born, the closest thing they have come to a real leader that finally got something done is doing nine years for corruption and the city for all of the surrounding prosperity remains a stagnant pool of promised dreams and no progress.
Rudy is a leader, not just another placeholder. No doubt it takes a lot of people to make it all happen, but it takes one to pull them all together.

Thompson will pay a big price for his beleatedness entering the race, but now that he has, the rest of the GOP field will evicerate him. They already started by slamming him at last nights Republican candidate debate because instead of attending the debate, he chose to announce his candidacy on the Jay Leno show.

Peace... John Edwards in 2008

I think Fred is a nice guy but will only make a good president if he has a good script writer. He is an actor but doesn't have the charisma of Reagan. I don't think his popularity as a candidate will last.

Juliano has a charming personality and nice smile and is enough of a middle-of-the roader he might make it, but the fact that his firefighters don't like him and that the radio communication problem between police and firefighters hasn't been corrected is a black mark against him.

get a man with a strong southern twang and add something to the tune of banning fags and telling people what to do regarding abortions and mention god a few times and all of a sudden your the best candidate? Yea, maybe for a few of you but i gurantee you are in the minority and that is not an american view on things. might wanna take a look at yourself.

Look at his theory on government it makes sense. I dont care about abortion or the gay issue. They are false issue meant to drive us apart. I look at role of government and go from there

I'll admit I like some of the words of Thompson, but the point of this article was on how the newsmag published this story.
To be honest, this is just how they see themselves. I saw flipping through the TV at my cousin's, CNN is placing Thompson high on the candidate list as who they think will win too...
It is not up to the media, not even the news media to make statements on who will be President or anythng else. That is up to the people, but the news media seems to think it is up to them to direct us to who they want.

I prefer Ron Paul on the republican side, I want the government cut significantly, i want the IRS gone, I want the income tax gone, I want us out of other countries affairs and our bases over seas shut down and soldiers brought home..

Bascially, i wanna see ron paul debate either Obama or Hilary in the debates. Im affraid of all the other republican candidates, red flags all over the place with those idiots. And yes, the media is making an a$$ out of themselves, but we all know this and we should just stop subscribing to their BS and send a message. If you want information, then read and watch foreign news and visit independant news sites.

Well he went ahead an announced on JayLeno, also before midnight EDT. And Pubius, his announcement was published by the BBC...it was HIS announcement they published, not a reporter's "story" about his announcement. BBC does have editors, and they do mind their manners. They are not Faux News. Or as it is called in the UK, Sky News.

Boy am I happy. Newsweek has taken the burden off our shoulders so now we don't have to vote the new leader has been anointed. He can move in with Bush and go into training for the next 15 months or so. That way he will know just how to manipulate government.

True, Ron Paul would blow either one of them out of the water.

Umm...how many years did he serve as a lobbyist for General Electric? The role of government, MD? Yeah, the role of government serving big business is more like it.

For once, can't we elect someone INTELLIGENT??????????????????? What the hell does this country have against intelligent, well-spoken, educated, experienced people? Why do so many Americans go for the pretty-boy actor type? The guy with the "good ol' boy, I'm just one of the boys" drawl?

Politicians are all actors anyway. They love being in the public eye, they smile, they tell you what you want to hear. They can also pretend to be anything you want them to be. They memorize their lines, are articulate, and are use to the public eye.

Yeah, and my mechanic is kinda intelligent, too, but I wouldn't want him as president of the United States. Liberal talking points? Can you get through one comment thread without playing the label game, MD? If you want to comment on the lobbyist issues, then comment on the ISSUE.

Do you think that the fact that Thompson spent years as a lobbyist for one of the most powerful military support companies will have any affect on how he will make decisions in the future? Can you give me your opinion without resorting to stupid, meaningless labels?

Robert - absolutely. It takes everyone together to make an effective democracy. The citizens have to be informed, educated and involved, too. We have gotten away from this in this country. How many people do you know that you see every day who can tell you what the headlines are for that day, or who can speak intelligently about major issues facing the country, or who communicate with their representatives on their opinions? How many people get involved in their local government - attend town meetings, understand items on which they are asked to vote?

The only influence Thompson would have is being more knowlegable about what they do. It would not effect his decisions. It is important to not that many lobbyists have at different time worked on different sides of issues. Do you think that makes them have divided loyalty probabbly not. If we are going to hold everyone to that standard Rudy would not be a good cantidate because he was mayor of New York and he might give more money to them. Bill Clinton was Governor of Arkansas but we did not see all the federal governments resources going there. I hope that addresses you question

I don't think you can compare someone who held a government position such as Mayor or Governor, with someone who was paid for years to promote an industry. Sorry, I just don't buy that.

And if he was so intelligent and committed to public service and loved serving his country in the governmental area, why did he leave to become an actor? I'm very curious about why someone who was in government to a certain extent would opt out for years, then return to run for the most important position in the country. Just doesn't impress me.

People, he's an actor, and ex lobbyist, one of the lowest worms in the political world, his kids are still lobbyists, and he has no integrity, like I already pointed out. How does this make him a good presidential candidate? If I had to vote only Republican, I would be all over supporting Ron Paul, a man with a little integrity, and the courage to speak his convictions, even when they aren't popular to everyone. If he had a bit more social conscience, I might anyway.

Huckabee will not win, hes too religious and most of us do not like that and it frightens us. He wears it on his sleve too much, we have had enough of religion in our White House its caused so much trouble already. We dont want a bush repeat. I gurantee he will not win.

I think you'll find the religious right has more to say about the election than you or I want them to have. I am not religious but I am spiritual; I am a Republican, but I am Liberal; I just can't move over to the Party of Hillary and Edwards or even Ted K. I can't become that Liberal. Bush's religion is his crutch--it helps him through his alchol addiction--I've seen it with other AA'ers. Clinton was a church goer--he was from the south, of course he was. I don't think Hillary has that same leaning--I don't think she needs religion, she is her own Pastor.

I'm frustrated with the way things are currently--I do believe we need to stay the course in Iraq--please don't let us be seen as 'cut and run with our tails between our legs'. If we pull out now, we will be fighting on other battlefields, hopefully not our own.

Don't be guided by partisan views. Try to think for yourselves, not the party line. My parent's were stanch Democrats, my husband a stanch, die hard, Republican, I think I am the biggest middle of the roader I know and don't see anyone on either side who can take us where we need to go.

Maybe we can ask all our religious friends to pray for all of the people on this earth.
