I think the smell is escapable and I've got a pretty good sense of it. I adored Venice and also found only very happy people there. My favorite cities are Venice and Prague. I'd go down with either of those ships!

Yes, Marco I would want to live there. People are so kind, hospitable and Sweeeeeeeeeeeet. I loved Venice and I wish I can go again there.

Nice picture Marco and an idea, but I think I would rather walk, save that way too. Of course not very practical but I don't want to leave here not that I don't like to travel but there is no place like home. Unless of course Venice is home to you.

I could do it. Start flooding the streets we're all getting row boats. Could we at least have a little trolling motor on them.

Hey, they do that just about every summer afternoon in New Orleans (of course, it's gone an hour later). Of course, up here in Chicago they've got these things called "basements" that might create a problem.

I can't swim so this might not be the best transportation for me but I think it looks pretty. I would love to visit if I can have a life jacket. It's probably not that deep there is it?

Just how many of the world's population do you think we can fit into Venice, or anyplace on earth capable of having canals like they do? I think we are stuck with our fuel problems for just a bit longer. Nice try, though. Venice wouldn't stay nice and picturesque for long with the world's population rushing into it, even without the rising waterline!

Loved Venice and seeing the city from a gondola. The smell, tho, soon became troublesome, so even there, walking the sidestreets and over limitless canals, shopping the vendors and artists stands became the way to go !!!

I'm with Lynn, I COULD do it, but would rather not w/o a little motor power and that takes gas too! Thanks for the nice viewing visit though, maybe someday I will venture out of the US, but highly unlikely.

I've always wanted to visit Venice. If the people are nice and I could save on the transportation I would move their in a heartbeat. Love the picture. Makes me want to visit even more.

Yes the smell was intolerable at first, but that was when I visited in 1984, perhaps the atmosphere has become more 'nose friendly' since then. I would love to return as the gandola is the most unique way to travel !

I am so happy your intelligence is showing! To build that mode of transportation in areas that are feasible would be great! Unfortunatly we do not have the grace or the time to do with less, so some regular transportation must exsist. How horrible to think you could go from point a to b in a small craft of some sort. Perhaps the boys's over in Iraq could stop fighting for all that oil, and the enviorment could get a break for the safety of future generations. If that could save one life that os now at war,just think what good we would be doing. No more repeated hi-way repairs, all wasted money on buses and Suv,s could be stopped. Hell, Brazil has put us to shame with their capability to be independent of oil, and Bush has purchased way up in the billions ethynol from them instead of coming to the American people first. I guess he needs to "cover his economic ass", I'm sorry, but I saw our wonderful soldiers saving the handicapped and starving childre of Iraq. I can still cry. Kudos to you Marco, for thinking out side of the box, after all, this is America, and we can do anything!!! Good article! I love to be by the water, that is why I live in Florida. Venice has always peaked my interest. I think after awhile one gets used to smells or maybe sinus problems help. Tee Hee!
I am sure someone with come up with a money making idea reduce our dependency on oil/ gas and life will be much different in years to come. When you look at the progress with the different advances with technologies such as computers which used to be the size of a whole building and now are as small as a lap top, the wright brothers flight to the shuttle flights and black and white tvs to HDTV plasma hanging on our walls, todays cars will radically change in years to come as long as there is money to be made!!

To me, it's one of those places where it's great to visit, intriguing to experience, but definitely would NOT want to live in it! The stench alone can make one want to run! I'll pass on the scents of rancid, dirty water and go for high gas prices I guess! LOL

I love traveling to Europe but am always happy to get back to the USA. I love the picture too, but I like living right where I am. We are consolidating our trips, car pooling far more than we did before and just deal with the high price of gas. I enjoyed your suggestion and pictures but it the USA for me.

I will definitely try it for a month, as it is healthy and environment-friendly. Living a peaceful life is better than hustle and bustle of the cities.

Even though I live on an island, it is a big island and I'm not near the water. I like the idea of water transportation.

Bet they don't have road rage there. Seems to me a slower pace might be just the ticket too- we live in such a hurry-up world.

It would never work in the US. We would start out using a simple row boat, but soon there would be gas powered 4x4 quad engine monster boats. :-)
