Introduction
The bibliography gives a lot of background information on schizophrenia and on medicine in general. Even the political articles are about medical politics.
Japanese Research
"The P cell is a stimulated atypical lymphocyte that is found in schizophrenics and some of their relatives. This cell is suggested as a tentative laboratory indicator of the schizophrenia process. The main identifying features of the cell are its high cytoplasmic basophilia and leptochromatic nuclear structure. Furthermore, the cytoplasm often contains vacuoles and the nuclear shape is often irregular with one or more nucleoli visible." Hirata-Hibi & Hayashi (1993)
Similar reports have also appeared by Russian scientists. If "stimulated" means "activated", then this is consistent with the Russian findings. "Activated" cells are actively making protein from amino acids. This could happen if the cells were being flooded with amino acids due to a transport error. The cells would be forced to make protein to get rid of some of the excess amino acids. Otherwise the cells might blow up like balloons and burst.
The vacuoles are also consistent with this theory. Vacuoles often represent cell food. Amino acids are a form of cell food. Some excess amino acids could be converted to fat.
Russian Research
The Russians, using the electron microscope, reported "large activated lymphocytes (LAL)".
"The frequency of small lymphocytes in schizophrenic patients was lower and that of large lymphocytes, LAL and LB was higher than in controls (all p= < 0.01). The volume density (Vv) of mitochondria in LAL in individuals with schizophrenia was lower than in controls (p<0.05), correlated negatively with the frequency of LB, Vv and number of lysosomes in LB (all p<0.01) and with the psychosis severity (p<0.05). In schizophrenic patients a trend towards positive correlations between the frequency of LB and psychosis severity were found (p<0.07)." Uranova et al
Here "LB" is short for "lymphoblasts". The mitochondria were also abnormal suggesting a problem in energy metabolism. Energy metabolism is vital to the proper functioning of the brain, so schizophrenia may be explained by this data. A flooding of the cells with amino acids would explain this data.
The authors suggested a "dysfunction of energy metabolism" which was "related to schizophrenia". They are from the Laboratory of Clinical Neuropathology, Mental Health Research Center, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Moscow, Russia.
Abnormalities in platelets have been reported by Dr. Mesa Castillo of Havana, Cuba. He found "giant platelets" with "large vacuoles" and "elephant feet" (large pseudopodia). He also found "particles".
Conclusions
The data presented in this review are consistent with my own theories. I have long maintained that schizophrenia is a form of diabetes of the brain. Glucose metabolism in the brain is slow because the brain cells are being flooded with amino acids. The brain is burning amino acids instead of glucose causing inadequate production of ATP.
It would appear that a diet vey low in amino acids should be considered as a treatment.
