While I have mixed feelings about Wal-Mart, which has driven so many "mom and pop" stores out of business and sometimes seems like it is taking over the world, I feel that this information is important to people whose incomes are limited and/or who do not have prescription drug coverage or any insurance at all.
Wal-Mart announced yesterday that it has added more generic drugs to its program to provide many generics for a monthly cost of $4.00 USD. You can view and download the entire list, which Wal-Mart calls the "Live Better Index," at http://www.livebetterindex.com/4drug.pdf. The list now includes 361 products made up of 157 medication compounds.
In addition to the $4 generics, Wal-Mart is now also offering "family planning items," or fertility and birth control drugs, for a monthly cost of $9, which they say cannot be further reduced in price.
Some of the newly added medications are for ADD/ADHD, glaucoma, fungal infections, and acne.
Categories of medications available are as follows:
- Allergies/Cold & Flu
- Antibiotic Treatments
- Arthritis/Pain
- Asthma
- Cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Gastrointestinal Health
- Ear Health
- Fungal Infections
- Glaucoma/Eye Care
- Heart Health/Blood Pressure
- Mental Health
- Skin Conditions
- Thyroid Conditions
- Viruses
- Vitamins & Nutritional Health
- Women's Health
- Other Medical Conditions
Some of the drugs are not available at the $4 and $9 prices in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, Montana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming due to state laws in those states.
For more information, you can call 1-800-WALMART (1-800-925-6278) or visit your local Wal-Mart or Sam's Club to discuss the program with your pharmacist.

The generic drug program is a Godsend for many people on lower incomes. I have to give Walmart their dues for providing that for us. I printed out that list, took it to my sister's doctor, and had her prescribe all of her meds from it. It saves me almost $150.00 every month.
I decided to switch the prescriptions to Kmart after the second month. I found out that Kmart matches everything on the generic drug list that Walmart has. In fact, their's is even cheaper by about a nickle and their store is closer to my house so I save on gas!
I happen to be one of those people who does shop at WalMart at least a few times a month just because any money I can save on the things I need is money I can put towards savings, further education for my children, etc.
I do wonder if what they say is true, why is WalMart still in business??? Some of the employees I talk to as I check out are just glad to have a job and gain some experience in the real world.
BTW, my retired husband took a WM part time job. Like you, I am apprehensive about local stores they affect. And as might be expected, employment is a "hold your own ground" type of environment. But their Benefits appear to be exceptional. It does seem to be a great place to work for the young starter-outers or retirees, in providing much needed benefits. They can't be all bad?
I didn't know Walgreens had any program. I shopped there forever and was never offered anything.
My sisters Romance Entry. Help me support her.
Sadly, I've had to result to shopping at Walmart for baby formula. Our local Meijers stopped offering the large cans at the cheaper price. Now I'm forced with Walmart as I can't see spending over $20.00 for a can of formula when I can get it for $13.00 a Walmart.
Thanks...
good information to have.
