Dark Lover by J.R. Ward is the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Ward's vampire world is a little bit different than what we're used to seeing. For one, the vampires mostly drink only from other vampires, as human blood isn't strong enough for them. There is also a group of slayers called lessers. The lessers pretty much sell their soul in order to be able to fight the vampires.
The novel begins with one of the Black Dagger Brotherhood asking another brother, Wrath, if he would help his daughter go through her transition. The transition is when a human turns into a vampire. They become very weak and need lots of blood during this time. It's something that some of them do not survive. At first Wrath refuses, but certain events change the way he feels.
Beth Randall is the daughter who will be going through a transition. She doesn't know it and slowly Wrath has to bring the knowledge to her. Wrath begins to want her for himself which leads other things to happen. Meanwhile a cop that Beth runs into a lot for work, Butch, also has a crush on Beth. This drives him to do certain things that will forever change his life.
I tried to not give much away but this is definitely a book that's hard to put down. There's action, suspense, romance, even some comedy. The more I read the book the harder it was to walk away from it. This book also introduces you to the other brothers and some characters that the next books focus on.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in vampires, romance, or both combined!
