Many of you have probably read Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides, which I just finished. I started it somewhat reluctantly because I'd heard so much hype about it, but, having now read it, I can see why so many people told me I'd love it. I certainly did. I strongly recommend this book if you like stories about complex, fascinating families with some history thrown in. I was totally engrossed in the story and found Eugenides' depictions of the characters remarkably compassionate and loving.Â
I'm reading another page-turner now, of a completely different kind: We Need to Talk about Kevin, a novel by Lionel Shriver. This is a hard book to read at times, yet it's also hard to put down. Imagine one of the parents of the two boys who committed the Columbine massacre, referred to several times in this book, telling you about their family life together, the mother's doubts about what kind of man their son would be, and what kind of mother she was, and even what he was like as a toddler and you have a good idea of Shriver's book. There's lots here, too, about the heartbreaking difficulties the mother telling the story has in bonding and understanding her child, as well as the toll that raising their son takes on their marriage and on her career.
I'm new to Gather. Hope to hear from other book lovers.
