To me, the term “horror novel” gives a book a bad rap. I think it gives the impression that the book is trashy and poorly written. But amidst all the trashy and poorly written horror novels are a few gems. One of those is Misery by Stephen King.
In this novel, King doesn’t resort to silly monsters or supernatural forces. It sounds possible: a crazy lady is so caught up in a series of romance novels that she’ll go to any length to force the author to keep the main character, Misery, alive. The possible makes the horror really horrible.
King can also be a good writer. I don’t say “is” because I don’t think he always is. In the case of Misery, he is. And most authors of horror novels aren’t.
This little horror novel was so well written, so horrible, it made my legs hurt. If you’ve read it (written about 20 years ago), you know what I’m talking about.

I am definitely not a Stephen King type, but I guess if I was going to read one of his novels (I haven't yet), this would be the one. I know this was made into a movie with Kathy Bates, but I never saw it.
