While I was in a class to adopt another child

My daughter was home  punching a hole in the wall.  Why you ask?  I told her I was happy she told the truth.

"I feel I should tell you something.  I did it because everyone at school is doing it"

My mouth just hung for a minute, and when my brain returned its electrical currents back to normal, I asked, "Who did you hurt?"  

"You and Daddy, she said."

"And you, I added as I took away the new silver cell phone covered in a hot pink case that she just got yesterday. "

Gee she just got this phone. Probably got a little cocky. We all do that sometimes and have to pay the piper. I hope she learned her lesson and will be back in your good graces (with a phone) soon.

Could it be that even though she has been honest with you, she isn't being honest with herself? Maybe she thinks that she is doing it "because all the kids in school are doing it," but she might be feeling a bit insecure about your adopting another baby. Perhaps after all the commotion dies down you guys could have some mother/daughter time where you broach the subject.

You never mentioned how old she is. If she was my daughter and she was still in K-12 she would not have had a cell phone to beging with. She may be truthful and she may be sweet but she is a spoiled destructive brat and needs her bottom warmed but good.
I think taking the phone away was a wise decision, and I know you will be sitting down with her to have a little heart to heart....it could be the threat of a new kid around that's making her act out.

George - I understand you may have been treated that way when you were a child. And I'm sure it hurt.
But we know now that it is really not conducive to learning anything but fear when we hit a child.

I guess I come from the same school as the colonel,a warmed bottom will not hurt a child.I didn't say to knock one across the room.But now days a kid needs a cell phone to call home if there is a problem at school.But not for anyother reason.

She is thirteen. She is a manipulative spoiled brat. She only has the phone when she goes somewhere without me. Her father agrees with the Colonel, but I can't stand not to be in contact with her. She got a long talk, her phone taken away, and grounded until the wall is fixed. She can't figure out why Dad isn't in a hurry to fix it. I adopted her as an abused child, so hitting is not a good option for her. Brat that's her occupation.

jUST KEEP ON HER. SHE WILL LEARN SOME THINGS ARE BAD CHOICES, AND ONE HAS TO PAY THIER DUES. IT MAY TAKE TIME, BUT CONTINUITY, WILL BE THE KEY, AND WITH LOVE AS THE EXTRA MEASURE.

Carol have you heard of a book called "Boundaries?" It sure did help me. One of our girls had been abused and fragile. She still doesn't make good choices even though she is 20, but the book did help through the teen years. There is another one I used with my therapeutic foster care called "try and make me." I liked that one too. We have to be so careful how we handle these fragile kids.
that seems like a really strange thing to do.
I hope there is resolution for your family and she learns to be less 'brat'ty.

I'd be a little concerned about her state of mind. Does she go to counseling? Being a teen is hard (almost as hard as being a mother of a teen). Did she do it TO hurt you, or was that her final take on the situation? Was she angry? I had to teach my one son how to vent anger without breaking things. He had to replace a number of objects in the house until he found himself a punching bag. Maybe she doesn't know what to do with her anger?
