How you doin' Lennox?
I'm doing pretty good. Tired. Struggling with the first sentence of a story. You?
Yeah, not much room with 8-12 words. It'll be interesting to see what is sent in and selected for publication.
On the bigger scale, I am disappointed to see this movement toward considering a few words a story. I admit that I am at an age where I should fear being tossed into the "can't teach old dogs new tricks" category, but will risk making the statement anyway. While I appreciate the time and thought the author might (should) put into a few-word project, and the benefit that process lends to writing, on the reading side I think it further promotes our society's propensity for instant gratification.
Already, people are reading less. I see Gather members state that they "can't" read more than a few paragraphs here, but they jump right to another publication and read a few more paragraphs, and another . . . and I wonder if it isn't really voluntary attention deficit.
I think every line we write should be tight and tell a story, and that most of us should string a bunch of those tight lines together until we develop a complete story.
I had some fun with 75-word stories the other day, for another place, but I'm not sure I can even approach this one.
I've been one of Charles Lennox's biggest fans since the day I met him, and enjoy reading anything he writes. If he recommends this publication and the others take tight-writing to the art form he does, I am sure I will enjoy reading them too.
