How I got published

I have been published in several different areas. I write for my local newspaper so it is nice to see my name in print. I wrote three stories about parenting multiple children( I have twins!!!!). And where I get to see my name whenever you google me....by blogging. Although I haven't scored a paid blogging gig, I enjoy writing and maybe my tasty tidbits of information will garnish me another shot at what I like to do!

Cindy, Anne Lamott purports that it's the writing (above all else) you have to love the most, and it sounds like you do (although I agree seeing your name in print and on google comes in a close second). Surely your writing will lead to more (paid!) writing. Keep on keepin on.

Congratulations on your work that is published. I think it's important for writers to create opportunities.

If I'm restless I also google my name. I'm so impressed with the other women who share my name, one's a doctor, one rides a bike to raise funds for an organization helping with a medical condition! Oh, I forgot I think one is a superintendent at a school.

I have been a published writer for many years but stopped doing that when I branched into bookselling. If anyone wants tips on how to get published, drop me a line. Glad to help. I started out with a background in teaching and as an English major in college, from scratch, sending out query letters and proposals. I made it into national magazines. Actually, I think I'll write an article with tricks and tips and publish it on Gather....wheels are spinning as I write this..:)

Keep writing! I started out like you and took nearly any writing opportunity that came along. I even entered a contest for Redbook or Parenting magazine, describing a discipline problem I'd solved and won a cash prize and saw my name in print. I was hooked from then on, plugging away, continuing to brainstorm ideas and sending out queries. Sooner or later, the editors must have gotten tired of saying "No" because they started saying, "Yes".

I would suggest you submit to Ac (Associated Content). There are writers there who get their pieces picked up by magazine editors. Check it out. You can network there. Also, check into the group on Gather called Getting Published outside of Gather. I think the community here gives excellent feedback on writing but, as freelancer and book reviewer, I segue my pieces into many markets. Good writing is in demand, particular in the world of magazines.
