Hey, world. Welcome to Taking Over Gather, the regular series of seemingly random thoughts that will hopefully amuse you, make you think, and bend your will to my unyielding command. Actually, the last part is all that's really important to me, but if you're amused, it might make submitting that much easier.
Why take over Gather, you ask? Easy answer -it's a lot more work to take over Facebook. I only have so much time, you know...
So, to start things off, I thought I'd start things off with a little plagiarism. That's right, despite its recent lack of popularity, I'm going to steal a comment from Nancy Silveria's page, and claim it as my own.
Because it is.
You see, Nancy wrote an article called Question of the Night, where she inquired about who motivates you as a writer or artist. A great question, which made me think. I'm re-posting my comment here, as the first article to Take Over Gather. Keep this in mind: I enjoy the work of so many of my peers here. This is not a list of people whose work I enjoy, because were I to write that, it would be too long to read. We have so many talented writers to choose from, and should feel proud of that. The question, however, was who motivated me as a writer. I took it one step further, and decided to write about the people on Gather who have changed me as writer since I joined. Here it is...
Warren Adler: Because he's the model. He's where I want to be. And his thoughtful observations on life and writing are always encouraging and uplifting to beginners like me.
Zale Orcid: the most underrated, unknown, talented, off-beat, pleasure to read, sleeper hit, phenomenal poet on Gather. Please stop sleeping on this talent and read her work now!!
Glenn Allenson: Glenn was the first to do what no one else did: really tear into my work. He challenged me to raise the bar on my prose writing, and in doing so truly opened my eyes to a lot of what I'd missed or ignored. Hats off to you, sir. Stop by sometime, will ya?
Thomas the Younger: also known these days as Tommy Tsunami. Thomas' writing is so unique it's at times staggering. The man has a voice, to say the least. Another who gave me some outstanding suggestions on my prose writing, which I appreciate greatly. Also, he's shown me how cool italics are ;)
Poddar. I won't even say both names, what's the use? We all know this talented gent, who's so good I won't even bother to hyperlink his name. Look, I've written entire poems based off a single phrase he mentions in passing. 'Nuff said.
Terry Collett: Because he's the master. He lifts the mask away from the world and shows us its true face.
And lastly, before you think I'm insane:
Selene Victoria Skye Deme, or Purrrr for short - who also gets no hyperlink, because if you don't know who she is, then you're not on Gather. You're in Gather hell, where instead of reading her eye-popping, heartbeat palpitating, cranium quivering, hold on to your butts style of writing, all you do is hear me talk about how good Way of the Reaper is, and why you're not reading it. (Man, I'm shameless...)
Selene has a staggering way of igniting thought and feeling with her writes, which I'll say no more about, because her head is too big already. (jk, luv u) Yet despite her celebrity status here, she is still a true salt, who actually cares about her readers, and will even let a lost dreamer like me have a poetic dance with her once in a while. Hugs.
Now that I've written this book, let me close by saying there are plenty of other writers here I whose work I love and admire. But these are writers who have inspired me, caused me to see that I can climb higher, and go farther. I can only thank them, and hope one day I can do the same for someone else.
That's my list. Who has influenced you on Gather? Give them some love!
By Lewis Knight, author up the upcoming novel, Way of the Reaper.

My Inspirations:
James Ciriaco - I doubt anyone will be surprised that I mention James. I admit to a bias, as he's my partner. However, it was his talent as a writer and as a poet that first drew my eye to him, when we met all of those years ago. He's one of those rare cases where talent lives hand in hand with intelligence and education. I've learned a great deal from, find constant inspiration from his work and do genuinely believe he's one of the best writers on the site, hands down. I wouldn't be writing today if I hadn't met him.
Atticus - I'm surprised that Atticus isn't mentioned more often on lists like these, because he takes second place for best poet on this site. He doesn't have as large a profile as many of the people listed here have (although he gives great comment) but he has natural talent, and an intuition for language that you don't often see. I confess I've jotted down notes for poems of my own, after reading his.
Adrian Revenaugh - Adrian is living the life I sometimes daydream about having. She is genuinely -good-. She's also a hell of a writer-- at first I loved Ade for herself, but after reading more and more of her work, I also love her now for her ability to create reality from words. She's an artist, no question about it.
Ann M. - Ann is Gather's Patron Lady of the Arts. I don't think there are many on the site who can claim to have done as much as she has, in encouraging and supporting the local talent. She is unfailingly constructive, patient and gracious in her comments but I also love the edge she reveals now and again. I think she's my polar opposite in terms of personality, but I respect and admire her for it. I'd be a better person if I were a little more like Ann.
Do one at a time, in a post, that's how I've been doing it and at that rate, I know I'll never be able to tell them all just how much they mean, and if Lewis had done this on Facebook, well, he didn't and it's because of me? Why, thank you, my friend! (psst, I can't join facebook, my son's on there.... geez!)
