Working together...good or bad? - HE GOT IT!

I spoke with my younger brother this afternoon and found out that he has an interview with my company in the morning.  I work at Tribune Media, part of the worldwide corporation that owns the Chicago Tribune, as a broadcast editor.  It's a pretty big company, but I'm fairly sure he would be coming to work in my department.  Now, my boss' younger brother also works in our department and they love working together.  But my brother asked me today if I'd have a problem if they offered him a job, since we live together as well and that might be too much time together.

I don't have a problem with it, and with my brother's and my relationship, I can't forsee there ever being a problem.  I want to know, what do you think of working with a family member?  Do you think, if the job does not entail much close work with coworkers, that it would be OK?  Opinions please!!

 

Well, it happened fast.  He interviewed this morning and was hired this afternoon.  Apparently he did very well and they liked him.  The woman that interviewed him had also interviewed me and even though I don't work closely with her, she remembered me from last year!  He starts Monday, so hopefully he will like the job and do well.  And show up on time everyday so I don't look bad ; )  If he doesn't like it, I'll understand, but it kind of makes me proud that he followed me to my company.  Thanks to everyone for their advice and kind words.  I hope it will only be the best for us!!

My daughter worked with me once and it was not a good experience. If she made a mistake or took a day off coworkers would question me.

Used to work with and for family. I would NEVER do it again.

I would think working with my brother would be easier than that might time say, around my boyfriend. But then again......(on my boyfriend part, not your brother)
I work with my husband, and we work together very well.

My dad hired me when I was 18 , I had no experience. I worked for him directly. Times are much different now, good jobs require an education... I was young and didn't take advantage of the opportunity I was given. My dad picked me up from work each work day at 4:30 a.m., being young I really didn't have much experience with work at all... I always ran late. In retrospect I appreciate the opportunity I was given, afterall I did develop a good work ethic with a little time and experience. :)

I'd be fine with it but really depends on the relationship you have with your brother and if he will be a good employee.

That's the thing you have to worry about, is he going to be a good employee? You can be the best of friends but if he screws up at work it can affect the way they look at you.

Ya, I also think that it really depends how good the relations ae between you and your brother...after all the previous things does matter in the present business.

My Brother worked with me when we were younger,,, we worked well together for a very long time,,,
I worked along with my husband on a job with younger people and it didn't work out,,,
Family is better to work with when you must,,,

if you both get along great now.. & live together.. i doubt working together would be any different ! i know i couldn't work with any of my siblings.. living with them is enough ! haha

Make an agreement upfront to keep childhood and home issues at HOME.
That includes stories of your youth or dates now or whatever.

good one Amanda. I always thought that my brothers were better than me, and therefore had a low appreciation of what I did . It has grown better over the years. If you have a good relationship with him and can joke about most anything, then it should work out..If you can keep the job relationship from entering the home relationship, and vice versa, then have a blast...
