(An old joke borrowed from somewhere else, updated for the modern age.)
Is God Real?
An atheist professor was teaching a college class at Alabama and he told the class that he was going to prove that there is no God. He said, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you 15 minutes!" Ten minutes went by.
He kept taunting God, saying, "Here I am, God. I'm still waiting." He got down to the last couple of minutes and a big 240 pound football player in the class walked up to the professor, hit him full force in the face, and sent him flying from his platform. The professor struggled up, obviously shaken and yelled, "What's the matter with you? Why did you do that?"
The football player replied, "GOD WAS BUSY; HE SENT ME!"
(Unfortunately, his claim of 'will of God' was not upheld in court, and he was later convicted of assault, sentenced to six months in prison, and lost his athletics scholarship. The professor is expected to file a civil suit against him later this year for medical damages caused by his broken jaw, in addition to pain and suffering.)

Is that what God would really have wanted the football player to do? Not the God I worship.
Standing up for what you believe does not equal violence, folks. The professor was probably inappropriate in his childish demonstration, but that did not excuse the athlete's act of violence. When will people start realizing that freedom of speech does not just apply to them...it applies to everyone, regardless of how much you disagree with them.
Freedom of Speech is a legal right related to government non-interference in political speech, not interpersonal right related to private conversations. It guarantees the right to not get arrested for what you say, or to not otherwise be shut up by government authority. It does not guarantee the right to be heard. If you say something stupid, no one is required to listen to your load of bovine produced fertilizer.
A true Christian would have known that such a violent reaction would go against his beliefs. A smart Christian would have simply laughed at the stupidity of the prof in question. After all, every other Christian in the room would have understood the fallacy of his argument's premise, and they all should have been laughing at him.
An educated Atheist would have known that the Bible makes a provision for situations like that, stating that one should not test God, and that God does not answer the prayers (any communication with God being a prayer) of those without belief... and an Atheist would certainly fit that description. Therefore, he could stand on his platform and yell his fool head off, but as an Atheist who is being a obnoxious rather than voicing a serious question, he does not qualify for God's attention.
I do find it amazing that so many Atheists try to convert Christians to their way of thinking, then claim that Atheism isn't a religion... if it isn't, why are the proselytizing?
