The "Lighter" Side Of Being A One-Legged Wonder

May 07, 2008 04:20 AM EDT
By now, most of you are aware of my situation in losing my right leg; what I've gone through, am going through and still face ahead.  I've got more progress to report on...in a bit.  Not being able to do much running around...figuratively and literally, I end up with lots of time on my hands.  It gives me time to think, which can be a dangerous thing the way you know my mind works sometimes.  I've used some of that thinking time wisely for a change in figuring out how to do various things now that I'm faced with the challenge I have.  You also know my brain can't stay focused other times and tends to wander and come up with the most obscure stuff.
I'm none too pleased in having my leg removed and the are many drawbacks from having it gone, as you can imagine.  In my thinking...and getting ready to go off on a totally different tangant...I realize there's nothing I can do but accept what's happened, deal with it and move on.  It's not a plesant thing to have to come to terms with, but it must happen in order for life to continue...and I think I have.  Alright, now that I've got that out of the way, here come the part where my warped imagination kicks in.  Sure, there are some negatives I have to face just as a matter of reality, but what about some of the positive aspects of what's happened.  You know, it's somewhat bad, but in ways, things aren't as bad as they were before.  Think about it.
As I mentioned before, I had to change the brand of bar soap I use.  I can't use Lever 2000 to bathe with...because I no longer have all 2000 parts.  What do you think I changed to?
Irish Spring...maybe it can help put a little 'spring' back into my step.  I know some of you are dieting and here I go and lose weight in the snap of a finger.  You're using a treadmill and a stationary bike.  They used a hacksaw on me...and a good 10 pounds was gone.  I dropped to 170 overnight...at 6'4.  I also no longer tinkle when I go to the bathroom.  Being somewhat unsteady standing on one foot, the aim tends to be somewhat off and I don't want to constantly have to clean up the floor.  Now, I squat...like a little girlie...to pee.  What do you ladies call it?  Now I sprinkle!
I save money on laundry...I only have one sock to wash
...or I can go further between loads by wearing both from the same pair when I change them.  I also save on having to polish shoes with only the left one needing buffing.  Only five toe nails to clip, too!  What a time saver.  If someone goes to step on my toes, they've got few targets to aim for.  They'd better watch their step.  I might not be able to stomp back on their foot, but I can always hit 'em with one of my crutches.  When I go out walking in the rain, if a puddle is too deep; I only have to worry about getting one foot soaked.
I'd love to be there to see the look on the face of the guy who has to make my prosthetic leg for me.  It comes complete and will have to have a functioning foot on it...to match my other foot.  I know he's going to end up calling someone to inquire about the mistake made in its measurement.  I take a size 16 EEEEE...not something you just happen to run into everyday.  Get a ruler out and follow along the convertion.  My feet are 13 1/4 inches long and 5 1/2 inches wide. I've got some mighty big feet.  You can only imagine the size footprint I leave.  Big Foot lives!
On a serious note, your comments filled with hope, love, encouragement and praise have been overwhelming.  Some of you have even said how much of a different I've made in the way you look at things and how you face various obstacles in your way.  I'm just doing what I have to so I can get by...the will to survive and go on the best I can.  I'm not done living yet.  If my misfortune can benefit others and make a difference, then it was worthwhile and I have a message to bring forth and share to help anyone it can.
I've continued by daily walks hobbling around the neighborhood on my crutches.  I've learned to try and go earlier in the days; mornings; and I can avoid bigger crowds on the sidewalks and heavier traffic.  I've been trying to get around 10:00...and it's cooler then than in the middle of the afternoon.  I've made it out 28 days in a row now; 4 weeks; nearly a month.  It was scary at first, but my confidence has been boosted daily by doing it again successfully.  I can remember my first trip just across the street to the convenience store taking half an hour to complete.  I've cut that time by one third being down to 20 minutes now.  I've gone from three breaks to rest to just one...on my front veranda when I get back from the store before I tackle going up to the third floor step by step on my butt.  It works and I don't have to worry about my fear of falling down the stairs backwards.
I've also stepped things up, so to speak, and sometimes go out for two walks a day; half the time by my choice; the rest of the time because I'm such a ditz and forgot something.  I'm trying to get out twice daily at least three to four times a week.  Last Friday, I even increased it to going out three times...not by choice; being a ditz; a blond moment.  I went to grab some food at the convenience store across the street around 9 AM.  When I got home and checked my mail, i realized I needed to pay my bills for the month.  Up to my place I go and make out the checks and get ready to walk the two blocks up to the mailbox to send them on their way.  That's taken care of and I'm homeward bound.  Wouldn't you know it.  The moment I get back inside my apartment, it dawns on me I need some cash...from the bank on the opposite corner from where I just mailed my bills out.  I take a bit of a break and two hours later; I head back the two blocks to the bank.  By the time I get back home; I'm dragging.  I'm beat and have just about had it.  There's nothing that's going to get me back out a fourth time...unless it's a large vanilla custard at the ice cream shop three blocks up the street!
I've also started getting a little help here and there.  Some of my insurance problems have been straightened out and I'm at least getting my medications now...after going without them for a month because nobody wanted to pay.  I can also reschedule the appointments I missed with three doctors; my general practioner, the vascular surgeon and the prosthetic specialist.  I need to be fitted for a hearing aid I was approved for, too.  An agency has found a volunteer; an elderly, retired person; who will take me grocery shopping, wheel the cart for me AND carry the bags upstairs for me.  I can put them away once they're up to my top floor loft.  They're still searching for someone to help with a couple other household chores and rides to wherever I need to go.  A second agency has also contacted me about transportation.  On top of that, I've discovered a co-op where I can buy $65 worth of top-quality food for $30.  It's taken awhile, and I've fended for myself, but things are gradually, slowly, falling into place.  I've also had an acquaintance from back home come up a couple of times and he's taken out four weeks worth of trash and he removed the tension bar that closes my apartment door through air pressure...so it slams on me.  I don't have to worry about being knocked azz over teacup now!
I have discovered I need to do a bit of on line shopping.  I found about a site where donated items are auctioned off and I've seen a few things I just have to have from there.  I also need to find a pair of gloves to wear when I'm out walking...batting gloves, golf gloves, bicycle gloves.
Those crutches are starting to ruin my hands.  They were always so nice and smooth showing I didn't do manual labor for a living.  I used my brain and my talents.  Now, you'd think I was swinging a sledgehammer all day.  I've got calluses!  What's up with that?  And they're peeling...on my lower palms, on my upper palms under my fingers, on my fingers.  The only finger that's not affected is the one that's missing.  The middle finger on that hand is getting an extra workout compensating for it's neighbor being gone.  I still haven't noticed all the muscles everyone's told me I'd be developing; just in my left calf.  The rest of me is still as scrawny as ever, but this puny body is starting to get some stamina.  It's going to keep going, too.  I have nowhere to go but up and I ain't gonna stop 'til I get to the top!

You are beautiful! I must admit that you had me chuckling there for a few moments and sure hope you don't mind but you do have a desirable way of looking at things. If only we could all have this positive outlook on life. As I have said to you before, YOU inspire me. I haven't even a percentage of your problems and yet I have to think of "poor, poor pitiful me" sometimes. What a shame I must admit.

With your positive outlook and attitude anything is possible and I have faith in you that you will indeed accomplish anything that your mind sets up to do.

I am happy that things are falling into place with your insurance, help in getting your groceries, transportation and the like. Before I had finished reading this I had already thought to tell you that there are organizations that help physically handicapped or challenged folks with running around doing errands and doing chores for one around the house. You should inquire about someone coming to help you do some housecleaning and possibly even cooking you a meal or two. I know they provide this type of help here in Dallas so I'm sure they offer it there in Rochester too if one inquires and needs the assistance.

All I can say about YOU is that I am so very proud to have you as my friend as you continue to inspire ME!

God bless you and keep you in his light and grace. ;)

Esther - Such a sweet, sweet gal. I'm trying to keep the help to a minimum and retain as much independence as i can...devising my own way of doing things...unconventional sometimes, but they work. I can do all my housecleaning; dishes, vacuum, toilet and sink, and it's funnier than hell seeing me sweep and mop the bathroom and kitchen where there's no carpet...like a little, old lady with my walker and the broom or mop tucked under my arm in short, little strokes. I cook and bake, so no problem there. Just a couple things I can't do involving heavy, bulky lifting...laundry and trash. I've got everything else under control. I've got to do as much as possible for myself because I'm alone, which is probably the way I'll always be. And I'm hoping I'm not always going to be in the shape I'm in physically. Once I get a prosthetic, I can go back to doing things the regular way for the most part. You've just got to get it in your mind you have to do things because they have to be done...and nobody else is going to do them for you...so you do them yourself and get them done! Just that simple, baby! Glad you're doing better, too...Good to have you back, you old molester...LOL!

Cori - You've got to keep your sense of humor. Laughter really IS the best medicine. And if I'm not laughing at myself; I'm going to have to laugh at you...LOL! Yes, I'm getting strong physically and mentally...I'm especially mental as you can tell by some of my writings.

You may have lost a leg but somehow you seem to have a leg up on the rest of us in gumption! Thank goodness you stopped using that 2000 soap, it will dry all your parts! Irish Spring is just as bad. You need Dove or something like it, nice softness and getting clean too. ;o)

Seriously I am very glad that you are doing so well, I really felt for you when I read your description of your first venture out by yourself. You are really making progress. I wish I was doing as well. Maybe I will have to have Bill stop doing so much for me so I can make more progress. I still have both legs but a very weak back from surgery.

Wanda - I don't have a leg up on anyone. I've got a nub up on you...LOL! Oh, and dear no...some parts don't need to be dry! I usually use Zest, but Irish Spring was on sale - six bars for $1.98. If you want something bad enough, you'll figure out a way to get it. If you have Bill stopping doing some things, your only choice will to be if you do it. Whatever it is, it will eventually get on you enough you'll just end up doing it, so why not start making your mind up you WILL do it...as soon as you're done relaxing, eating bon bons and watching TV.

Sheila - You and me both! Some things are reasonable priced, but other things are outrageous, not to mention such a small selection...like one choice. Take it or leave it...and you pay the price that's marked. I liked grocery shopping already, but I really need a life getting excited for my next trip...LOL!

Penni - There's a fire escape out the kitchen window...and I can't climb out the window to set up anything. Plus, that's where the air conditioner will go when I can find someone to put it in...not something I can move as it is. I'll 'con' someone into taking it down eventually.

Audrey - That first day when I fell trying to go out and fell at the front door...I would have told you I could never do this. After a couple days, I realized I not only could; I had to. I had no choice. Like the way you've progressed in just a year...out and about like it's nobody's business, karate, a visit from mom and a return back to the homeland coming up. Lots has already change for you for the better, lady...even that beam on your face shows how happy you've made yourself. Nobody did that but you! Loads of love right back atcha.

Your attitude and sense of humor are beyond inspiring. They make me feel like I don't have the right to complain about anyhthing at all. I'm so happy to hear of the number of outings you've taken, as I believe they help keep your mind healthy, and we all know about the healthy body/healthy mind link. I hope you're journaling about all of this, as it would make for excellent reading down the road. Many, many good wishes of abundant blessings to you!

Hi Rob,
Crutches are great tripping people that annoy you too! I Love your sense of humor, mine is a bit warped as well and influenced by my best friend Missy C.
We've been best friends for 27 years and she happens to be an amputee since the age of 2. I've had her most of my life as an example of how to live with physical problems. Knowing her and experiencing life with her somehow made it easier for me to accept and adapt when I became challenged myself.
She is such a joyful, funny person. We have had electric shopping cart races (and yes rubbing is racing!) crutch and cane sword fights and she laughed herself silly when I slapped her hard on the leg for something shocking she said and hurt myself because I hit the artificial one!
I'm so glad you are doing well and I can't wait to see how much independence you regain when you get that leg.
BTW, my favorite upside to using a wheelchair when I am out: The rides at Disney World and most amusement parks are accessible only through the exit door. NO waiting in those lines!
Oh yeah and reserved seats at general admission events!

At first found your humour a bit sardonic, then very relieved to see it's just Rob as only he can be!! Most everything seems to really be falling into place I am so very glad to hear, the mama in me has settled a bit, and won't give you as much time in my head worrying about it all. The best attitude in you for sure Rob, and inspiring you are! One thing the mama could do, and wouldn't be suffocating, lol, humour me, if you really do like cookies, email me your snail, mama will get some there without fail, repayment for helping me put my "poor me's" in check and get back to my original philosophy:

ROTFLMAO, that is one of Missy's favorite things to say. She will kill me for saying this but she earned the nickname "Mighty Missy" because she is so strong and fiesty. Plus she is only 4'9" but she is quite a presence!

Awhile back, I saw a company online where you can get just one shoe instead of a pair if you only have one leg. Don't know if its cheaper though. My son takes a size 15 shoe and I thought that was big but I see you have him beat. Years ago, when I was housebound, I used to order groceries from Net Grocer online. They delivered the food right to my front porch. It was more expensive though than going to a regular grocery store. They even had liquid milk that you can keep on your cupboard shelf until after it's opened and it even tasted good too. Some of our local grocery stores will deliver groceries free to the disabled. You just call them up and give them the list of what you want and they assemble your order and deliver it and collect the money for it.

You GO, Rob!! You ARE helping the people who read what you have to say about changing your attitudes and the way you look at things! And THAT, my friend, is a noble, NOBLE cause! Most of the time people don't SEE the really important things because they are caught up in a merry-go-round of trivial, niggly CRAP that, in the greater scheme of things, mean NOTHING... YOU have been given (not by your choice, of course) this "opportunity" to be one of the few among us with insight into the things in life that really COUNT and I (and I'm CERTAIN that I'm not alone in this) just admire the HELL out of you.

I've never used the term "sprinkle" in my life!

I will just continue to say that somehow, this experience has been good for you. You are doing more than you ever did when you had both legs...it has forced you to get out and get busy, and I hate it that you had to go through this...but, I'm so glad to see you becoming part of the world again. I'm sure there are many here that you are helping...and I'm proud of you for being so open about your journey!

Karen - There were times I felt like getting drunk and being whiny, but the liquor store is too far up the street for me to walk on crutches yet.

Ruth - I actually can have some sugar and carbs. I just have to watch my intake and eat in moderation. Large cookies - 2, medium cookies - 3, small cookies - 5 or 6< I can have cake, pie, ice cream...just not a lot at one sitting if it contains real sugar. If it's sugar free or contains artificial sweeteners, I can eat as much of it as I want.

Dawn - Mine should be, "Get the 'eff' out of my way!"

Janet - I've seen sites that sell single shoes, but I hope to have a prosthetic leg by later this year, so I'm going to need a full pair. I don't want to pay higher prices ordering groceries on line. I need them brought to the third floor...and none of the grocery stores around here deliver. They don't even have the motorized wheelchair carts.

Jessica - I've been told I'm a few chips shy of being a bagful of chips, but I've never been told I need a couple bags of chips...or that I'm all that and a bag of chips. I'm thin as it is and losing the leg cut back on my weight even moreso. I don't mind being too skinny after being so heavy for so many years.

William - Is that like: Here I sit, broken-hearted. came to sh*t, but only farted."

Mary - You can count on keeping informed. Rob the Brave is here to save the day. Oh, right...that was Mighty Mouse who is supposed to save the day.

Chris and Amy...or is that Chris...or is it Amy - Yes, it's hard adjusting. Have pity on me. Now where that Big Mac you promised. I want junk food with my cookies. I haven't had any Mikecy D's in about three years now...and I've got a craving.

Sue - If you don't sprinkle, what do you do when you're sitting there??? Don't tell me you just pee. How boring! But at least you're proud of me. I'm kind of a little proud of myself, too. Scott says he is, but the whole thing is still freaking him out. He can't believe how much I've been able to accomplish on my own with him being around and helping me. When your best friend is having a hard time dealing with you problems and you can't rely on him for assistance, you're the only one you can rely on, so you have to do it. I'm hoping he comes around soon and doesn't let it keep bothering him.

What a lesson this is for those of us who love to sit around and complain about what we don't have. And after reading this, I'm definitely going to be more positive about my daily walks. I should feel so blessed that I CAN go walk without a care in the world. Heck, after reading your article, I feel like going for a run....:) Thanks for a great article and for letting us know how you're doing. You truly are an inspiration. Keep writing!

Cheryl - For those who like to sit around and complain, we should all get together out on my balcony for a little party some day and have us a good, old fashioned 'Bitch Fest'...let it all hang out and get it off our chests. Isn't it amazing how we take such a simple thing as walking for granted...until our ability to do so is taken away...and we still don't let that stop us from doing something we've basically been doing all our life. Now, do you sprinkle...or do you tinkle...or do you pee...or something else?

Rob, I think attitude is the most important thing when things go wrong with the human body. My MIL got through cancer because she had an upbeat attitude and I think that is one of the most important things. You sound like you are doing very well mentally. You are making lemonade since you were given lemons!

You are going to conquer this problem because you see things correctly. Yes, it stinks that you had a leg removed BUT you can see the humor in your situation, which is a wonderful thing.

Good luck getting used to it all. I've been handicapped in the past (altho' it was not something removed but something braced) and know how it makes you feel at first. With good people around you, and a good attitude, you will be alright.

Thanks for this wonderful article. I'm glad to see how you are doing.

I don't understand Scott's reaction exactly, but this is one of those times where his age may have something to do with it. As I mentioned once before on one of your articles...the news tends to leave a person a bit speechless, and in person I'm sure it is even harder. He is still young enough to feel as if nothing bad can happen, and then he not only could have lost his best friend, his friend is left with a life altering disability. I think he will eventually come around and see that actually, you are going to be able to do all the things you could before...just differently. Well, hopscotch might be harder...but, you can do it. I can't wait to see what you can accomplish when you "get your leg" although, I think there will be a real transition period with that too.

I'm sure you have dark days sometimes, but I must admit, we are all impressed with your outlook. During my most trying medical experiences (giving childbirth and a grisly cancer treatment and regimen), I learned that humor was the best antidote to dealing with my pain and loss.

Certainly friends will comment on your 'positive' attitude, but they should know it is less for your benefit than for theirs. After all, it is your intimates and caregivers who will be the recipients of your good humor.

Ron, I think you know the worst is over. Now the best starts. Bless you, my friend.
