Click on the link below to read and decide if you want to sign an American Pain Foundation sponsored petition to protect chronic pain sufferers from being denied treatment for their pain. The petition is there because the FDA is considering
policy regarding a huge chunk of the medications used to treat severe chronic pain, and is accepting public feedback in the form of comments until the end of the June.
The policy is called Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies, or REMS. The possibilities range from leaving things as they are to completely doing away with this portion of treatment options for pain. According to the text explaining the petition, the FDA has received several comments calling for a complete ban of these medications.
The petition is not the FDA's forum, but will be submitted to it with all of the comments left by those who sign. This can have a much bigger impact than individual comments, letting the FDA know that both chronic pain patients and their families are against banning needed and effective treatments, and are willing to band together to say so.
I signed the petition. Below the link is the comment I left on the site. I think it is no less than criminal to limit treatment options for one person based on the behavior of another. I hope a huge number of people check out the petition, especially those who know someone who is a sufferer of severe chronic pain, and that everyone who agrees with the position not only signs, but chooses to leave their thoughts on the subject so that others will know their opinion. The more people they hear from, the better.
Urge FDA to Protect the Rights of People with Pain
My comment on the site:
Taking needed medication away from chronic pain sufferers is no more ethical than beating people with a ball bat to CAUSE that amount of pain. As soon as you deny pain relief, you become the cause of the pain and are morally and ethically responsible for its continuation and consequences.
Shame on anyone who would consider reducing the options available to chronic pain patients for pain management.
My mother was hit and almost killed by a drunk driver nearly 30 years ago and has suffered terrible pain since then, and has had to take medicine to control the level of that pain. Even with the medicine, she is never pain free, only pain reduced. She has never done anything illegal or wrong, nor has she ever shown any signs (during nearly 3 decades of treatment) of addiction or abuse, yet you are considering punishing her as if she were a drug abuser by taking away the only medicine which has been able to control her pain without having negative side effects. The stated reason in REMS is that OTHER people might abuse the medication as a drug. That is a ridiculous reason.
In that case, you need to outlaw computers, alcohol, cars, video recorders, energy drinks, credit cards, lottery, the teacher education system, television, radio, newspapers, magazines, fast food, clothing, the united states postal system, telephones, candy, cold and flu medicines, and several other ordinary items which are commonly abused, misused, and diverted as well as both unintentionally and intentionally overdosed on (overused) by many people for many different reasons.
Terribly inconvenient idea, isn't it? The public outcry would be huge.
Taking pain medicines away from everyone because some people don't use them correctly is no different than taking away any of the above mentioned things away from everyone because some people don't use those things correctly. It's a stupid idea, and it's wrong.

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. I signed the petition.
I will sign the petition as well
That one hits home hard. I'll sign gladly. As stated it's a stupid idea.
DUN! And my statement was:
My brother, my sister, my wife and my daughter all suffer from chronic debilitating pain for which there is NO cure. Pain medications are the only palliatives that allow them to function AT ALL. This sort of suggestion appears to come from a portion of the community that views "drugs" as bad, no matter their use. It is, I'm willing to bet actual money, a part of the sanctimonious, self-righteous "War on Drugs" that's been so useless to date.
To take away the only thing that gives them the ability to walk from one room to another is just cruel, and to no purpose. To those who would say, "We'll teach them to live with their pain," I say, "You first. And I'll be happy to be the man to see that you get the full benefit of the experience."
On this we agree, Chuck. I had a doc tell me one time that pain is never debilitating. It was all I could to do to not wish my pain on him.
I will sign. I haved suffered from chornic pain.
I Will go check it out Hannah
I signed here is the comment I left:
I have chronic migraines and have had them since high school. I have followed ALL the doctor recommendations/orders for natural ways to help minimize them. I have gone from having 20-30 a year to having only 3 or 4 a year. OF these three or four when I get them I try tylenol or non narcotic medicines first. These migraines have gotten so bad that I have actual scarring in my brain that makes me mess up words sometimes calling a remote control a flashlight and things like that. My neurologist says if my migraine does not go away with my prescription medicine I am supposed to go to the hospital to get the pain under control to prevent further scarring. I STILL request nonnarcotic meds if possible and give them an honest try. Of the 3-4 migraines a year that I still get usually only 2 of them are bad enough to require me being heavily medicated or given narcotics to get rid of them. I do not abuse these meds but when I need to have them they are a necessity to prevent further brain damage. If you take this away it could be very dangerous/detrimental for people with similar situations to mine. I think the moneys and attentions should be focused on setting up a national database of some sort to identify people who are abusing the meds and ban them from being able to recieve further medications - without punishing the people who genuinely need them for valid reasons.
I have suffered from Migraines for as long as I can remember. The only thing that has remotely worked for me, and it's been almost a miracle, was Imitrex. If you haven't already tried it, I HIGHLY suggest it.
I will sign it. Thanks
I signed it. Thanks
You KNOW I signed it. I didn't copy my whole comment, but it had to do with the fact that without my medication, I have no life. I can barely walk, much less take care of my children. I have 2 just in case canes, as in "Just in case I wake up and can't walk that day."
Thanks for posting on Getting to 3000 Together
I signed and passed it along to others to sign. This is SO important! Especially people on Disability or Workers' Comp. are consistently denied care! They're usually the ones who need it most.
Now, this is so very wrong! Why punish the victim here? She was hit by someone who was intoxicated for cripes sake! Now she's in pain and they're taking away her right to reduce it? That's just plain sick.
I will sign the petition. I have ankylosing spodilitis. It seems to me that the war on drugs has turned into the war on patients also.
Karen~
I signed and this is my comment:
I suffer from ankylosing spondilitis. The FDA keeps confusing medical need and the war on drugs. This has gone on long enough. It is time to protect law abiding citizens. You would think in this country the FDA would not punish those who are ill. And especially not lump those that are ill with drug addicts. This is another case of the rotten apple spoiling the bunch.
They do not have to worry about health care, have it for free. Naturally our health is not any concern for them.
Thanks everyone for checking out the site and to everyone who signed! The petition's goal was 1000 signatures... it has 4075!
You got me too, fat chance they'll listen to us though. How much more controlling can they get?
The Federal government has a bug up their butt about drugs of any sort and they are really on a control tear lately. I sure hope this does something but I'm not holding my breathe.
The petition is closed. Great idea though!
Haannah, I abasolutely agree with your statement "no less than criminal to limit treatment options for one person based on the behavior of another"
So, I guess because some people eat a dozen doughnuts instead of just one, to stay on tract, they will have to ban doughnuts. Where does it end?
A 10 to you!
