People are enraged. This happened in New York. The teen was drunk and allegedly threatening the black man's 19 year old son. The angry father confronted the drunk teen and shot him in the face at close range.
Now, a judge in New York sentenced the man to two to five years. The maximum sentence is fifteen years. The man was also allowed to go free awaiting trial.
Now, here's the question: If a white man had shot a drunk black teen, what would the sentence have been.
Also, in Oklahoma, the black father would do no time as he was protecting his home and family. Although did he try to avoid the incident due to the fact the young man was 17.
I have mixed feelings here. If the father really felt imminent danger to his son, then maybe he was justified and should receive no sentence. But if the judge felt he should receive 2-5 years, then the man is guilty of a terrible crime.
Gun control advocates argue he shouldn't have a gun. My constitution says he has a right to bear arms.
So what's a nation to do? Do you think justice was served. I'm really torn with this one.

If it was a white man who did it .. I think the outcome would have been about the same. Public outrage the same too. In a situation like this any how.
It is our right to bear arms .. however sometimes gun owners allow the situation and the feelings at the time to get the better of them. They should try to remain level headed .. and think things thru before shooting. No one has to do a fatal shot unless death to themselves or a family member is imminent.
I think the new york judge was just for the most part ... had it have been some other state .. things may not have turned out the same... who knows.. I know as a parent if I had to defend my child to the point where I really thought I had to kill a person .. I would.
I can't say one way or the other on this case, because I don't have all of the facts of the situation. Was it a trial by jury, and if so did the jury have their say in the sentencing? Did he plead out to a lesser sentence with the promise of leniency?

Locally when the event first happened more of the facts were given vs. what I can seem to find TODAY. All of the focus seems to be on skin color and innocence of the victim. I have seen stories where teenagers were fatally shot in ritsy Boca Raton neighborhoods for playing pranks. They never received much coverage outside of Florida

Horn: He's coming out the window right now, I gotta go, buddy. I'm sorry, but he's coming out the window.
Dispatcher: Don't, don't — don't go out the door. Mr. Horn? Mr. Horn?
Horn: They just stole something. I'm going after them, I'm sorry.
Dispatcher: Don't go outside.
Horn: I ain't letting them get away with this s--t. They stole something. They got a bag of something.
Dispatcher: Don't go outside the house.
Horn: I'm doing this.
Dispatcher: Mr. Horn, do not go outside the house.
Horn: I'm sorry. This ain't right, buddy.
Dispatcher: You're going to get yourself shot if you go outside that house with a gun, I don't care what you think.
Horn: You want to make a bet?
Dispatcher: OK? Stay in the house.
Horn: They're getting away!
Dispatcher: That's all right. Property's not worth killing someone over, OK?
Horn: [curses]
Dispatcher: Don't go out the house. Don't be shooting nobody. I know you're pissed and you're frustrated, but don't do it.
Horn: They got a bag of loot.
Dispatcher: OK. How big is the bag ... which way are they going?
Horn: I'm going outside. I'll find out.
Dispatcher: I don't want you going outside, Mr. Horn.
Horn: Well, here it goes, buddy. You hear the shotgun clicking and I'm going.
Dispatcher: Don't go outside.
Horn: [yelling] Move, you're dead!
[Sound of shots being fired]
Sheila U hit the nail on the head. That is why the jury verdict confounds everyone because the facts of the case are not being reported in a non race conflicting manner.
The truth can sell too if someone would try it every now and then.
If someone jumps on you while U are holding a gun is that not intentionally threatening a life or is that self-defense?
As for the father,..why didn't he call the police? What happened to shooting to protect his life/fear? what happened to walking away? what happened to knowing kids will be kids? What happened to just shooting the gun in the air to scare him off?...tragic all around,..the life of this kid is not worth more then 2-5 years? I feel for his parents. So what are New Yorkers going to do about this?
But I wonder what was done to try and stop the teen before the father shot him? I mean come on it was two against one, why bring a gun in to it?
I also believe the father should of tried shooting in the leg or something to slow him down first. Not in the head.
But than again if I was protecting my child, I would probably shoot to kill as well. So, I think the amount of time he got is fair.
I seemed to have introduced some confusion here. In my first comment I said that it was unlikely that a white guy would even be indicted in Texas. In a follow up comment, I introduced the case of Mr. Horn, including a portion of the transcript of a phone call he had with a police dispatcher.
The facts of this case are not in dispute. Mr. Horn left the safety of his house with a shotgun with the avowed intention of confronting two burglary suspects. He made no effort to apprehend them and proceeded to "shoot them in the back". The portion of this episode that was not recorded on the 911 tape was witnessed by a plain clothes police officer parked across the street.
Christine, I live in Houston and yes I listened to the whole tape moree than once and read the entire transcript in the newspaper.
This incident is not related to the incident reported in the original article. I included it simply to offer a contrast in outcomes.
People are angry for so many reasons. ie: a bad day, just got fired, no money, miserable lives etc. We must be so careful when we approach people. It is better to back off sometimes and call the police and let them handle the problem than to riun youe life.
Why was this young man drinking at 17 years old? Where were his parents? Who served a 17 year old? Was it in the house? We need to start holding parents responsible for the actions of their kids.
It's sad that this young person got shot and it's also sad that the shooter saw no other alternative than to shoot him in the face.
Is it really so surprising that people actually use the things?
When I visit America people say to me, "Oh dear you live in Mexico, aren't you afraid?" I laugh and reply, I'm more afraid to walk the streets in any American city than I am living anywhere in Mexico... I don't know where American's get their ideas about Mexico, probably from the same news service you got your information about this story...
Do you really believe you have ALL the facts??
Now I’m dropping by to see ya
