I used to take sleep for granted. You probably know how it goes: "Oh, I can get by on four or six hours of sleep. It's not going to affect me." And, for a while, it didn't. Unfortunately, two car accidents and an injury at work later, my ability to get by on little sleep has been seriously curtailed.
On average, it feels like I get about half as much sleep as I'm supposed to on any given evening - given six hours to rest, I get three hours (or less!) of sleep. My back hurts, my neck hurts, and I can never seem to find a comfortable position. My brain races, my limbs twitch, and it usually takes me a long time to fall asleep. And then I wake up two to four times during the evening.
I really miss sleep, or at least waking up and actually feeling refreshed. How refreshed are you when you sleep?

For everybody, if you or your spouse is always tired, snores loudly and stops breathing, gasping for air at night, get a sleep study done. You may save a life!
Have you tried natural remedies, such as herbal teas that contain valerium or chamomile? Sometimes a nice, relaxing routine or putting lavender under your pillow can add to the soothing atmosphere. A friend loves her "white noise" machine. There is also melatonim, which I think is also natural and helps you reset your internal clock.
Attitude also helps, at least for me. I go to bed at a set time and simply rest, whether I sleep or not. I did have a sleep study and discovered that even when I thought I was awake, I was actually asleep a good part of the time. So I try not to tense up about it. If I want more relaxation, I read a soothing (or boring) book.
Good luck! If you find the answer, share it with us. Oh, yeah - try not to nap during the day.
Doc just gave me a script for Ambien (4th different sleep aid) and I have a sleep study scheduled for Tuesday.
It's been a long 7 years since I started with this, I hope you get some relief soon
Get that sleep problem taken care of before it becomes chronic.
