Birds of the Tyler Zoo - Photo Essay

For Mother's Day we ended up going to the Tyler, TX Zoo, called the Caldwell Zoo. I took a ton of pictures, and everyone was patient with me taking so long to get the best shots I could! Here are some of the birds we saw......

This little blue guy was in the Wild Bird Walkabout. You could buy a stick with birdseed on it for $1.00 & try to entice someone to eat it. We just watched.

I'm not sure what this pink, strange0billed bird is exactly....

Is this a pelican? The Caldwell Zoo is only ok on putting up signs to identify.

Such a pretty bird~

This is me, handing this parrot a stick. They all seemed bored out of their minds & wanting something to do. When I gave him the stick, he promptly broke it up into tiny pieces, letting them drop to the ground. I did this with a couple of the birds & they all seemed to want something to do.

 Now this guy was a show-ff, he preened around a bit on the branch for me while I took pictures & then he turned around to show me ALL of his colors.

 

They all had so much character. I wish I could have one, but I know they are a really long term commitment....even outlasting marriages & lives....

A very vibrant set of birds. I'm not sure what they are, but their coloring is striking!

This flamingo had just went in for a bath & was drying his neck on the rest of his body....or using his neck like a washcloth....not sure on that, but he was fun to watch!

 

After we finished at the zoo, we went to OutBack Steakhouse for a big, filling dinner. It was a wonderful Mothers Day~

that's a pretty cool place to go for mother's day ! too bad they didn't label them to good.. but all those birds are gorgeous.. love all the colors !

What wonderful photos, and also a very long ago reminiscence. Way back in 1952, I attended Caldwell Kindergarten which shared the space with Caldwell Zoo. I went on to graduate from Tyler Lee there before moving on to Houston then Minneapolis. Thank you for sharing your photos and providing a wonderful memory as well:-)

You took some great picture Priscilla. I need to take my daughter there soon, she would love it. Maybe when D comes back home we will be able to make the trip there.

You know the Caldwell zoo used to be free but poor management and wanting to have on-site vets made it to where its not anymore.

Ang, I am glad to pay to get inside if it brings the animals better treatment. We saw & talked about how some of the cats, foxes, etc were in too small of enclosures. I hope the funds we pay may help build larger enclosures for the animals.

What astounding birds you saw. The parakeet made me miss the one I used to have, smart little guy. He used to fly to me when I came in the door. Yes, he had the run of one room. He was so talkative!

WOW! Love the varities of birds you took...love the red ones too and those Blue McCaws are rare and so stunning up close surprised to see them in a zoo....these birds [McCaws] do require living wills if you own one because they can live to be 80-90 years old...some people won't sell them to you until you prove first that financially you can arrange for their care should you die.....then again if you can afford ONE let alone TWO Blue McCaws you can afford lots of things...including their care after your gone....kind of like Hemmingways Cats.

This is a beautiful photo essay Priscilla, - I have looked at these pictures several times trying to determine my favorite one and it is very tough, - I think my fav has to be the 2 blue boirds....they are so cool and beautiful!!!

What an absolutely wonderful photo essay! I haven't been to the Caldwell Zoo but have been to Tyler quite a few times. The birds were gorgeous!!

I have a best friend who used to be the Director of Programming for the NBC affiliate there in Tyler and a best girlfriend who lives there as well.

priscilla, when Tracy was three years old that was her favorite place to go. I took her there a lot. I had no camera, so no pictures. It was the petting zoo that she liked. I was always amazed by the monkeys. LOL.

They even had a cow back then that the kids were shown how to milk. It was so sad when some idiot came and shot the buck that was I guess to near the road for comfort. They had him on the left as you entered the zoo. I dont even think they charged back then. the late 70,s.

You are right, they are a big responsibility, the parrotts, and some of the other birds always have a much long life expectancy than we do.

It was the Caldwell Zoo I went to come to think of it. I guess they just had different ones or sections. I had just moved to Tyler area, and someone else took me, She knew where everything was and I was new.

Nice photo essay Priscilla. The birds are beautiful. We visited a bird sanctuary while we were in Niagara Falls in 2006. It was such a treat to see so many different birds.

These are some great photos, and you've shown birds I've never seen in my life. Those reddish-orange ones shine so that they almost look plastic. Amazing. You had a great Mother's Day I believe.
