I'm fairly new, too. I'm still learning my way around as well. It looks like you are interested in photography. I love photography as a hobby, but don't have any real aspirations with it. My aspirations are more around writing. I live in California. I'm now single and have one grown 22 year old son.

One thing I have figured out yet is what is the purpose of the points? And what can I do with them?

I have figured out that points can earn you items. Then if you earn enough points, I think it's like 3000, a month on average, that you can earn money to your Paypal account. Sounds pretty good!

I met people by starting on one article then going to one of the groups they had listed and read another article so on and so forth ... you will not only find new groups, learn new things and who writes or reports to your liking ... YES, there will be dozens of people on the way! WELCOME & ENJOY!

Well, everyone who subscribes to this group just got a link to your article in their email, so you've done a smart thing. You'll do just fine. I just ran around commenting on everyone elses stuff until I felt comfortable to start posting my own. I think you'll do just fine. Don't be afraid to hit that invite button either, especially since you have work up for people to look at.

Jennifer, this is a wonderful site where you can make many new friends and meet many great writers and photographers. I hope you continue to enjoy it here and feel free to message me if there is anything I can help you with.

Thanks guys, you all gave me some great advice and I think starting a new group will be a great way to connect with others and I have been posting lots of my photography too. Thanks all for taking the time to help me! :)

Thanks Dan! I really appreciate the information. I didn't realize that you get something with just 625 points. I had read about trying to get the 3000 a month to get cash. I love photography, music, and writing so I'm trying to get involved with those groups and people as much as possible. My new group is really going well. There must be a lot of people that like the 80's more than cheese *lol*.

Hi Jennifer and welcome to gather. Dan has given you some great advice on finding connections. As you read articles and view photos on gather, after you comment you can click on the blue names of other people who have commented on the same article/photo and check out what they have posted. If you find their content interesting, comment on a few of them that you like and then if you feel they would be a good connection, send an invite to them with a short note in the box available explaining why you would like to be connected to them.
I know you will really enjoy your visits to gather and will find a lot of people who share your interests.
There are a lot of groups that will help you navigate around also. On the front page of gather.com at the bottom are Featured Groups, if you click on view all I am sure you will find many groups which feature things you are interested in. Jennifer. I had this page link in my bookmarks. I know a lot of groups have been added since this article was written, but it is a good place to start since it has clickable links which take you to a page listing groups in each catagory with clickable links to the actual groups.
